The fintech world beyond Silicon Valley and Europe: Emerging market contenders

The fintech world beyond Silicon Valley and Europe: Emerging market contenders | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
According to a recent study by Accenture, investments in fintech hit $5.3 billion in the first quarter of this year (having grown 75 percent in 2015, exceeding $22 billion). These are staggering figures for a still nascent industry, which can have a monumental impact on all sectors, from lending and investments to savings and payments.

Hitherto, most of the investments have occurred in the U.S. and Europe, with a marked exception this year when China’s Ant Financial completed a staggering $4.5 billion raise at a $60 billion valuation, making it one of the highest-valued private companies in the world.

This recent raise may draw to emerging markets attention from the world beyond London, New York and Silicon Valley, which importantly house more than 90 percent of the world’s under-30 population. Countries other than the U.S. and U.K. have collectively spawned a range of visibly successful companies in search (Yandex, Baidu), e-commerce (Alibaba, Rocket Internet’s portfolio) and media (Naspers) by mostly applying tried and tested Western strategies to the local know-how.

A 21st Century Teaching Methodology for an 18th Century Educational Ideal | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Good teaching in the 21st century is not so different from good teaching in the late 18th century. Well, at least its not that different when you consider Wilhelm von Humboldt’s “Educational Ideal”.

Thus, the goal of education is to foster creative, critical and autonomous thinking.

Check it out, great approach...

An IoT-driven economy requires technology-empowered firstline workers | #InternetOfThings

An IoT-driven economy requires technology-empowered firstline workers | #InternetOfThings | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

We continue to bask in the glory of the information technology revolution, now a three-decade-long event, which has reshaping the jobs of professionals and corporate staffs across the globe. However, it seems most workers have actually been left out of the equation -- the so-called firstline workforce, consisting of field technicians, healthcare providers, retail clerks, drivers, and so on.

They're called "firstline" for a reason -- they're the people with whom your customers are most likely to have first and only contact. If they can't deliver the goods or services because they are missing out on technology, then your company is seen as unable to deliver, simple as that.

With the rise of the Internet of Things and associated artificial intelligence, it's more important than ever that firstline workers receive the training, support and technology tools they need to deliver on meeting their customers' needs. Manufacturers, in particular, are seeing a dramatic shift in their business models, with more revenue coming from aftermarket service and support, especially as they develop the ability to monitor products and run analytics for predictive maintenance.

More than 80 percent of executives in a recent survey from Forbes Insights and Microsoft agree that empowering firstline workers with the tools and platforms they need has a direct impact on customer satisfaction, growth and worker job satisfaction,. In this survey, which I helped design and analyze, we found that this important component of the workforce continues to be overlooked.

What Is Crowdfunding And How Does It Benefit The Economy | #ICT #Business #Entrepreneurship

What Is Crowdfunding And How Does It Benefit The Economy | #ICT #Business #Entrepreneurship | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Crowdfunding is by definition, “the practice of funding a project or venture by raising many small amounts of money from a large number of people, typically via the Internet.”  Check out this video to get a clearer idea of the step by step process of crowdfunding.

In a seemingly nonstop recession wave, small businesses are struggling more than ever to stay afloat, and entrepreneurs are not facing great odds. Crowdfunding offers these individuals a chance at success, by showcasing their businesses and projects to the entire world.

There are numerous donation crowdfunding platforms where entrepreneurs can safely ask for capital such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, RocketHub, and investment platforms like 1000 Angels, the company I co-founded, to name a few. While each site offers their unique spin, the general concept is the same across the board. Project creators can create a profile typically containing a short video, an introduction to their project, a list of rewards per donation, and some images to elaborate. The idea is to create a compelling message that readers will be drawn towards.

The most important skills set for the 21st century is creative problem-solving and critical thinking. Our world is changing fast and the traditional career paths of the 20th Century no longer guarantee lifetime employment or security. Entrepreneurs develop resilience to adapt to changing conditions. And the development of the Internet offers a new generation of graduates the unparalleled possibility of founding a new company with a low capital investment – creating the fabric of tomorrow’s economy.

That will only happen in Europe if our society embraces well-reasoned risk-taking, failure and entrepreneurship. To start down that path, we need to free a new generation of students from the notion that they should follow the dictates of their parents’ generation, for whom success meant working for a large company or in government. The company man and the bureaucrat are yesterday’s heros. Tomorrow’s are the inventors, innovators and entrepreneurs. It is those individuals who can carry the European economy out of its current crisis and into a brighter future.
