Methods: Tradition vs. Relevance

Methods: Tradition vs. Relevance | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
The way many people have been programmed to interact with content through the Internet may be one reason why lectures have lost their allure for many.

When kids explore a topic today a primary source is YouTube, which is probably why it’s the second most used search engine after Google. Video for many seems to be more engaging. It also gives control to the learner to repeat or skip over material at will.

Beyond the video even the exploration of text for today’s learner is different. Before the digital explosion, text was stagnant. To get from point A to point G one had to read points B, C, D, E, and F first. Hyperlink changed that linear mindset. Today, while reading text learners can diverge from that straight path with the click of a mouse. They can travel down paths of their own choosing on the subject at hand. Again, they control the path of their learning.

The sources for learning today are much different from previous centuries when lectures ruled education. For the curious mind the digital journey seeking knowledge can be its own experience. Having control over one’s own learning is a very effective way to learn. It is also relatively new to a very conservative world in education.

Mission Critical: Championing-Empowering-Enabling Our Individual And Organizational Ability To Win

Mission Critical: Championing-Empowering-Enabling Our Individual And Organizational Ability To Win | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Change is not the obstacle, it is the answer.  Embracing our ability to champion positive change starts with a focus on the words we use.  Change is NOT difficult, it is our greatest power and hope for a better future.  Change is what our bodies and minds so every second of the day.

Our ability to move out of Jurassic Park by developing our individual and organization potential is real.  It requires focus, courage, integrity and a relentless desire to be part of the solution rather than running on overdrive, getting stuck in stasis or burying one’s head in the sand or under the rock of complacency.

Creating the Conditions to Unlearn

Creating the Conditions to Unlearn | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

===> It requires moving beyond the limitations of “I” and move towards the power of “we” <===

It requires us to persevere in our thinking and our efforts – without threat of humiliation or being labelled stupid

It requires to move beyond superficial knowledge and move toward deep understanding.

Perhaps if we want to see some of the educational reforms that come with “unlearning”, we need to start creating the conditions for “unlearning” for many of our educational partners

Still figuring it out…..

I believe that today we must unlearn to really be able to learn...That at least is what I try to do
Rajesh Kripalani's curator insight, March 15, 2013 12:11 AM

Unlearning is the real challenge here ... the learning comes easy after that.

Shawn Simpson's comment, March 19, 2013 7:22 AM
Unlearning is fascinating if one is willing to let go of their certainties for a while

Désapprendre, apprendre à apprendre: les objectifs éducatifs du XXIème siècle ?

Désapprendre, apprendre à apprendre: les objectifs éducatifs du XXIème siècle ? | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
