Student Groups Love Cayo

Student Groups Love Cayo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo gets quite a few student groups throughout the year.  Whether it be with the Institute for Sustainable International Studies or the Toucan Education Program, or self led, they get to enjoy Cayo.  The Belize Zoo gets a great mention in this article too, as does Cornerstone.

"During this past summer's Belize Teacher Institute, Belizean and U.S. teachers explored the Xunantunich Maya ruins together...   Through the College’s International Programs, individual students can arrange internships in human services, business, recreation, health, environmental preservation, archaeology, special education, wildlife preservation or other areas.  Seven took the plunge between summer this past summer and next spring.  Two students will be there in the spring.  A business economics major will intern at Cotton Tree Lodge, a unique eco-lodge hidden in the jungles of southern Belize.  Meanwhile, a community health major will experience hands-on learning at Cornerstone Foundation, a local agency that helps the community."

Kelby Strohm's curator insight, May 17, 2013 1:24 AM

I hope to do something like this! I really want to do an internship abroad specifically in south america! I'd have loved this!

36 Cayo Youth Complete Job Preparedness Training

36 Cayo Youth Complete Job Preparedness Training | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Feelgood news of the day.  36 youths from all around Cayo were trained in skills that bettered them for working.  The Department of Youth Services and the Cornerstone Foundation teamed up for the Job Preparedness Training, which took place mostly during October, and was part of the Youth Resilience and Inclusive Social Empowerment Project.  Thanks, DYS and Cornerstone!

"Thirty-six youths from San Ignacio and Santa Elena have graduated from a Job Preparedness Training course as part of the Employability Enhancement component of the Ministry of Human Development’s Youth Rise Project. During the 8-week course, the eighteen young men and eighteen young women, aged 14-24, were exposed to a variety of topics including skills identification; personal SWOT analysis; effective communication; conflict management; Belize’s Labor Laws; work etiquette; career exploration, resume and cover Letter writing; and interview skills.

The course, which ran from August 28-October 30, is based on the Job Preparedness Training Program developed by the Department of Youth Services (DYS) in the Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture. The training was delivered in a collaborative effort between DYS Santa Elena and the Cornerstone Foundation in San Ignacio. A second cycle of the Job Preparedness training is schedule for February 2018. Persons interested in participating in the next cycle should contact DYS in Santa Elena at 804-0540.

The Youth Resilience and Inclusive Social Empowerment (RISE) Project is a comprehensive social intervention, which responds to the challenges facing vulnerable groups, particularly at-risk youth in the Towns of San Ignacio/Santa Elena and Dangriga. The project is implemented by the Government of Belize via the Ministry of Human Development, Social Transformation & Poverty Alleviation and public sector and social partners with funding from the Caribbean Development Bank and the Government of Belize."

K.I.R.M. God is Business " From Day One"'s curator insight, June 25, 2018 9:52 AM

Job preparedness is an area of youth life that is being ignored atleast certain ones of them. As they are kicked out of school all together or are pushed thru the public schools system among other and allowed to graduate from high school and is not on the proper grade level nor prepared to nor have the educational skills or capability to but there are other provisions that most consider but as youth see as shameful because not being able to read or utilize their own fundings and having to go into another source of assistance to learn to read at a level they would be job readiness prepared and having the math skills to account and budget their fundings but now as and older than school age adult but much younger than thosd that are of older years in age that because they were born and lived during the years person such as themselves were not allowed to be provided public school education or they had to work as the children of share croppers for their families way of life and survival income. But truth be told they are more locked out of the job prepared readiness skills.
