The Cayo Side of Belize

The Cayo Side of Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo got hyped up in International Living.  While it's audience is more for people thinking of moving here, it's a good article, and highlights what they think people like about Cayo and its culture.  It's mentions the market, Midas, the SIRH, and even the Chaya Garden Ashram in Cristo Rey.  Cayo rules!

"The fertile Cayo is the bread basket of Belize. It’s also an eco-tourism wonderland.  This region is abundant with exotic birds, indigenous creatures, vibrant flowers and magnificent trees.  Belize’s most desirable hardwood trees—mahogany, zericote and rosewood—thrive in the Cayo...  San Ignacio’s Saturday open market is a social/cultural shopping event.  It’s the country’s largest open market.  Located on the edge of town—next to the banks of the Macal River—the market is expansive, aromatic, and buzzing with activity.  You’ll find an abundant, colorful selection of fresh fruits, veggies, herbs and regional food on offer.  All are locally grown and reasonably priced."

Pack for a Purpose with TRL

Pack for a Purpose with TRL | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Feelgood news of the day.  Table Rock Jungle Lodge is one of many lodges in Cayo that are supporting the Pack for a Purpose project, where they ask guests to bring some school supplies down in any extra space they might have in their luggage.  It might be just a book or 2 at a time, but over the course of a semester, that all adds up, and they donated it to the Cristo Rey primary school.  Thanks, TRL!

"

Thanks to all our great guests who PACKED FOR A PURPOSE this season and to our niece, MIKAELA TRULL, who celebrated her 13th birthday by asking for books and sports equipment for the Cristo Rey School kids rather than presents for herself!  This was our largest and most exciting donation yet!  Let's keep it up!  You can help the local village children when you visit Table Rock Jungle Lodge, Belize, too--click here for more details: www.packforapurpose.org"

25 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Belize

25 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

'25 things we all know about Belize' might have been a better title.  There's some cool Cayo information in this article from the Huffington Post.  The picture of the sleeping policeman in Cristo Rey leads the story.

"They still have hand-cranked ferries: One in the Cayo District, used to reach Xunantunich, and another Corozal to reach the Cerros site, these ferries are a flash back into the old Belize...  The tallest building is a Maya pyramid: The Caana temple at the Maya site of Caracol, rises 136 feet high."
