From backpackers to Princes – a real rags to riches story

From backpackers to Princes – a real rags to riches story | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Great article from Chaa Creek.  Some history is in there.

"While Belize’s love affair with the Royals hasn’t changed, Chaa Creek certainly has, with the Prince able to enjoy gourmet meals and fine wines from an excellent cellar. With 135 staff members on hand Prince Harry was well looked after, enjoying a professional massage from the Chaa Creek Spa, a visit to the onsite butterfly farm and quality amenities. 500 lit candles heralded the Price’s arrival.

'It was a wonderful visit and Prince Harry was a warm, appreciative guest who did seem to enjoy the Chaa Creek story,' Lucy Fleming said. 'And to us it really did bring home the fact that not all that long ago we had dirt floors, would kill a chicken for our guests’ dinner and had a staff of one – our neighbour’s son. I guess to go from backpackers to the Royal Family for guests is something, but to us it’s all just another part of the Chaa Creek story, and we couldn’t imagine life any other way.'"

Prince Harry must have loved his time at Chaa Creek.  He sure had a full schedule.  More great publicity for Cayo.

"'It was certainly good news to hear that, out of all the places to stay in Belize – and we do boast some excellent resorts and hotels now – The Prince chose Chaa Creek. It really reflects well on our staff and shows that we’re doing something right,' she said.

While at Chaa Creek the Prince visited the Butterfly Farm, enjoyed traditional Maya food with a gourmet twist, and relaxed with an hour-and-a-half massage.

'Of course with a guest such as Prince Harry, security is a major concern, but we value all of our guest’s privacy and wellbeing, so the security procedures we already have in place were sufficient, with of course a few modifications.'

Royal Relaxation at Belize’s Chaa Creek

Royal Relaxation at Belize’s Chaa Creek | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

"'Wow, this place looks so relaxing!' HRH Prince Harry exclaimed as he arrived at the Lodge at Chaa Creek, setting the tone for what he and Chaa Creek’s staff described as a very pleasant stay at Belize’s premier eco-resort, according to Chaa Creek’s owner Lucy Fleming.

'After checking in and strolling through the tropical gardens to his Tree Top Suite he commented on how peaceful Chaa Creek was, and then said he was very keen to taste one of our mojitos.

'In this way he wasn’t very different from many of our other guests. In fact, we were all quite taken with his very natural, easy going charm,' Ms Fleming said."

The building of the canoe that was presented to Prince Harry.  Amazing how much detail goes into one of those.  Mick Fleming, owner of Chaa Creek, was there to explain the process, and show us how durable those canoes really are.

Belizean Chefs Create Culinary Delights for Prince Harry

We agree that to really get to know a place, you must try the local food.  Prince Harry has been doing just that...but has he tried the Royal Rat yet?

"But if you had to nail it down to just one iconic Belizean dish, it would have to be coconut white rice and red kidney beans served with stewed chicken and chunky potato salad and fried ripe plantains. For added flavour, locals spice the dish up with one of several locally produced habanero based hot sauces. When ordering, if you would like to sound like a local, you would say it in one word: “riceandbeanschickenandsalad”."

Thanks to Selec Ta for the great picture!

Channel 7 interviewed Yanick Dalhouse at the BTB: "To this event, anyone is invited. It's a block party so come one, come all. It doesn't matter if you're in Belize City; it doesn't matter if you're in Placencia; it doesn't matter if you're all the way in Orange Walk. Come out to Belmopan. It's the old Coohoon Road that we're having this big celebration. There's going to be food. There's going to be entertainment. People are going to get a chance to see the prince. I mean it's really a celebration of having this royal here in Belize visiting us. People will be able to sample some of the food. They'll be able to dance. We'll have Garifuna dancers, Creole - it's going to be a big party. It's a huge party, and everyone has to come out - I mean this is a big event for us as Belizeans."

"Royal christening in Belize – a beer bottle and a canoe

Queen Elizabeth II christened the QE2 in 1967 with a bottle of champagne. When Prince Harry christened the Jubilee last week, named in honour of his grandmother’s Diamond Jubilee, or 60th anniversary of occupying the throne, he used a bottle of beer, according to the canoe’s builder, Chaa Creek owner Mick Fleming.

But the beer was Beliken, the country is Belize, and the Jubilee is a canoe, so it was perfectly fitting."

Prince Harry sends a fond farewell to all in Belize.

“Thank you for such a warm and friendly welcome to such a beautiful country. In only 23 hours, I feel as though I have seen so much of Belize through the thousands of people who lined the way. I am hugely grateful for the very happy memories, and I’m very sad to leave. I will pass on your good wishes to my grandmother, our Queen, on her Diamond Jubilee.

Tenk yu,

Shortly after climbing the beautiful Maya Ruins of Xunantunich, the BTB spoke with The Prince and asked him what stood out the most for him when in Belize. He was quick to reply, “Without a doubt, the people."

Prince Harry meets Belize’s Maiden of the Rock

Prince Harry had a grand time at Xunantunich.  Here's a picture of him with Joris, and the models from the fashio show.

"In the majestic setting of Xunantunich, His Royal Highness Prince Harry of Wales reached the highpoint of his visit to Belize: the 130 foot summit of El Castillo, the second tallest man-made structure in Belize. The highest is another Maya temple, Caana, the Sky Palace, in the ancient city of Caracol. The Prince later described the experience of El Castillo during an interview with the media. “It’s fantastic,” said the Prince. “The views up there are incredible and the fact that they’ve managed to keep as much as of the sort of natural beauty around this local area, as much as they can, is fantastic. It’s amazing.”

Prince Harry's Drinking and Dancing in the Line of Duty

Prince Harry's Drinking and Dancing in the Line of Duty | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Prince Harry should be enjoying Xunantunich, and the Eco-Love Fashion Show.  Great picture of the wrist bracelets, Joris Hendrik.

"Having gone through the traditional formalities of a meeting with the prime minister, Dean Barrow, and the Governor-General, Sir Colville Young, after landing in the former British Honduras, the Prince swapped his suit for a baggy Belizean Guayabera shirt and made his first official speech as the flag-bearer of the Queen of Belize, as she is correctly known here.

As he told a 2,000-strong crowd that he was sorry the Queen could not come and “you’re stuck with me”, the Prince dispensed with normal Royal protocol by replying to people in the road who shouted at him to speak up.  He even worked the crowd during the speech by telling people on one side of the street they were not as loud as the other, and urging them to make “a bit more noise” before telling them to “Mek wih go paaty” – or “let the party begin” in the Creole dialect."
