Video of the day.  Chef Sean Kuylen presented at the TedxBelmopan, and it was all about Belizean food, and not just the standard fare either.  From chaya to chocolate to casava, he covers it.  You'll love his sense of humor: "Here we are living in Belize, we are craving KFC, McDonald's, and we want Contraband beer, Shelly!"

"In a comedic performance, Chef Sean Kuylen teases our taste buds and summons nostalgia as he calls Belizeans to better appreciate their local cuisine.  Kuylen calls us to 'think globally but cook locally.'  Chef Sean Kuylen was born in Corozal Town and later relocated to Dangriga Town at age 7.  He attended Garifuna schools and began to relate to their culture, music and way of life.  At age 18, he founded and performed with the Griga Boyz Band and later the very popular Punta Rebels Band as a Garifuna Drummer.

In 2004, after college, he left Belize to pursue his Culinary Degree in San Francisco, California.  He did his culinary internship at Disney World in Orlando, Florida and eagerly returned home to work in Hopkins Village with a new look on Belizean cuisine.  He currently owns a mobile kitchen that caters and showcase his 'Inspired Belizean Cuisine.'

BTB Campaign Wins Awards

BTB Campaign Wins Awards | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Remember last year when the BTB offered the Breaking Bad stars a trip to Belize when they'd mentioned it in the show?  They won some awards because of it.  It was well done.

"The Belize Tourism Board with Olson Engage took home Best in Show honors for its 'Breaking Bad’s Trip to Belize' campaign at the In2 SABRE Awards at the Four Seasons San Francisco last week.  The campaign — which also won in for marketing buzz and digital influence — took home best in show for turning a potential negative into a memorable, remarkable opportunity.  Earlier this year, the hit AMC show 'Breaking Bad' used the phrase taking a 'trip to Belize' as a euphemism for killing someone.  Following this, the Belize Tourism Board showed its sense of humor in a series of light-hearted tweets directed at the show’s actors and TV influencers.  The team also partnered with the New York Times for an exclusive story inviting the cast of 'Breaking Bad' on  a free vacation to Belize."

The Garifuna Collective on the Road | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Garifuna Collective is on their 2 month North American tour right now, and they have started an indiegogo campaign to help raise funds for their journey.  They have uploaded a video on the page from their rehearsal at the Soul Project here in Cayo.   They'll spend 55 days on the road, travel 18,450 miles, and will have had 275 Hotel rooms when it's all finished.

"We have embarked on a historic two month tour of North America performing at many prestigious music festivals and venues in Canada and the United States.  The tour includes some 25 cities such as Toronto, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Vancouver, Chicago, Washington DC, Edmonton, Portland, Calgary, Minneapolis, Winnipeg and New York.  This tour coincides with the release of Ayo (Goodbye), our long anticipated album in honour of Belize's late cultural icon, Andy Palacio."

Cayo Castillo Chronicled | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo really steals the show in this travel article from the San Francisco Chronicle.  It's pretty comprehensive as far as attractions go.  3 of the 5 places to stay mentioned in the article are in Cayo: San Ignacio Resort Hotel, Ka'ana(which was just in an article about wellness travel), and Caves Branch.  The Guava Limb Cafe and Pacz Tours are also specifically mentioned.

Creativity Costs Less Than Alcohol

Positive thought of the day.  Creativity Costs Less Than Alcohol.  A quick video of Benque's mural from a while back, taken as they were doing another mural project.  Thanks, Jose!

"Jose Guerra Awe returns to the streets of the western towns of Benque Viejo del Carmen and San Ignacio in the Cayo District of Belize from his new home in San Francisco, California to continue inspiring a new generation of young artists - for now.....murals!  With Jo Jo, you never know what's next!!"
