Branch Out in Belize

Branch Out in Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Kinga Phillips, the Travel Channel writer that recently visited Cayo, wrote an amazingly accurate and vivid explanation of Actun Tunichil Muknal.   It really says it all.  She visited Cayo, where she got to explore caves, visit Mayan archaeological sites, and sleep 'amid the treetops at Parrot Nest Lodge.'  Of course she did, Cayo is the best.

"This isn’t some Pirates of the Caribbean Disney tour.  This is the real deal.  This is you as Indiana Jones exploring something remarkable.  No cameras are allowed in the cave, so staying present is a bonus side effect.  That’s not a difficult task when you are standing next to a shimmering calcite crystal coated skeleton of a child, hunched in final position, left in the dark in exchange for rain.  Take in the gravity of that when your group turns off their headlamps to experience the engulfing blackness."

ATM's new facilities and bathrooms, a much needed upgrade for ATM, are ready for use.

"The cave system was discovered in 1989 and opened to the public in 1998, with current visitation restricted to specific tour operators.  The ticket office is several hundred yards before the car park within a joint station with Belize Audubon Society presence for managing Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve.  NICH has recently purchased 5 acres of land at the entrance to the cave.  There are plans by Institute of Archaeology to move the ranger station to the area at the gateway to the cave and the site of the new bathrooms...  The ATM site is the most documented archaeological site in the country in terms of media coverage (past features on ABC, BBC, National Geographic, and the Travel Channel) and is a unique selling point for Belize internationally."

Belize 4th Happiest Country in the World

Belize 4th Happiest Country in the World | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Belize was again ranked one of the world's happiest countries, this time by the Travel Channel.  Belize ranked 4th on their top 10 happiest countries.  Picture is the Five Sisters Falls, taken at Gaia Riverlodge.

"With the second biggest barrier reef in the world, a laidback Caribbean lifestyle and a favorable climate, there’s a lot to be happy about in Belize.  But its cultural diversity is what is truly believed to make this country so content and welcoming: European, Creole, Hispanic and Mayan are some of the prevalent groups that form one harmonious culture here. Belize is the Travel Channel's 4th choice.  "The ruins of Xunantunich will be the location of Belize’s main event on Dec. 21, where festivities will include a concert and light show on the ruins, plus a fire ceremony to usher in the next 5,125 years."
