Happy 30th birthday to the Belize Zoo! In other news, Pat the Jaguar's 2 cubs are doing great at the Milwaukee Zoo.
"It's exactly 30 years to the day since TBZ Founding Director Sharon Matola nailed a little wooden hand painted sign to a little backyard zoo, cycled her bike down the road to the old Western Highway bar known as JB's, and announced "If anyone's bored, feel free to drop by Richard's Foster's place up the road, it's now a zoo." The sign read simply "The Belize Zoo," and has evolved from that last ditch effort to save a hand of wildlife to a stronghold for conservation and environmental education in Belize. We thank ALL our visitors, friends, and supporters that have joined us on an incredibly journey. Take a look at our brand new entrance sign, and here's to another 30 years. Happy Birthday, TBZ!!"

The PM has announced that to honor Belize's national heroes, the Western Highway will be renamed George Price Highway. The Northern Highway will be renamed Philip Goldson Highway. Great idea! Happy Independence Day!

Sacred Heart Junior College has the September Celebrations spirit! They are doing 3 different projects for National Service Day. The main project is a clean up of the Western Highway between Cayo and Succotz, which will occur between 7:00am and noon. On campus, they welcome Mr. Hector Silva, who'll talk about Belize's struggle to independence, and they'll also have a red, white, and blue dress up day.

The Belize Audubon Society also particpated in a Green Walk in celebration of Earth Day. They cleaned up a section of the Western Highway. Teamwork at its finest. Thanks, BAS!

The Belize Zoo was the location for action planning about the Central Wildlife Corridor, which is the area that connects the northern preserves to the Mayan Mountains in the south, allowing the movement of animals so they can have better access to their natural habitat and genetically mix.
"Thousands of people are admiring the beautiful billboard located along the Western Highway which broadcasts the Wildlife Corridor of Central Belize. The stunning photo of the margay cat, a resident of these important lands, was taken by photographer Carol Farneti-Foster. Carol, along with her photo assistant at times, niece Aleacia Jensen, kindly agreed to be a part of this photograph. Both are big fans of the Corridor concept and of course, they love one of the special places found within the Wildlife Corridor, The Belize Zoo! On the opposite side of the billboard is an attractive painting showing the Wildlife Corridor, and this was provided by long-time Belizean resident artist, Carolyn Carr. Both images reflect the beauty and the importance of these remaining wild lands in Belize."

Sacred Heart Junior College did a clean up today for National Service Day. They picked up trash along the Western Highway. Thanks, SHJC! They also had Hector Silva speak about Belize and its independence. It was a great session, and a lot was learned. Here's to the future!
"As part of our pre-Independence celebrations at SHJC, we organized 3 events for Sept. 19. First the highway cleanup project along the Western Highway, our first ever 'Wear it Blue, Red and/or White' Day & lastly, a talk on 'Belize's Struggle to Independence' done by Mr. Hector Silva."

What an awesome commercial! There are shots from every part of Belize here, and they are all great. It really captures the happy life in Belize. Cayo's in there. Mountain Pine Ridge had to be. The beginning of the La Ruta Maya River Challenge is in there too. And one of the bicycle races on the Western Highway. Whoever directed this deserves a double One Barrel and Coke.
