7 Astonishing Cayo Caves You Should Explore

7 Astonishing Cayo Caves You Should Explore | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo has quite a few entrances to Xibalba.  Read about 7 of the more common caves in Cayo in this travel article from Chaa Creek.  Did you know that the sink hole near St. Herman's Cave is called Actun Loch Tunich?

"Caves tell the history of Belize, having been an intricate part of the Maya religion and culture.  The Maya used caves as ceremonial sites and evidence of these activities can be found inside these caves.  Relics, principally in the form of shards of pottery, are very common."

Cayo Tops World's Best Budget Locations

Cayo Tops World's Best Budget Locations | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo was listed number 1 in a Huffington Post article about the best budget locations in the world.  The author has a lot of great things to say about Cayo and its residents.

"Warm and welcoming, independent and private. Those four perhaps seemingly contradictory adjectives best describe both Belizeans and their country.  Belize is also one of the safest countries in the world, despite what you may read about it...  However, I favor the interior Cayo region with its Mayan ruins, caves, rivers, waterfalls, and rain forest, a frontier where self-sufficient communities are emerging and attracting like-minded folks interested in being 'independent together,' as a friend living in this part of the world describes it.

Belize featured all this week on BBC Travel | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Belize will be featured all this week on BBC's Travel section.  The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was a great read.  There are quite a few well written articles on there:  "Everything from Maya sites to Cayes, exotic flora and fauna, culture and traditions will be portrayed with captivating titles such as: Action-Packed Belize, The Very Best of Belize, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Adventuring in Belize, Kicking Back in Caye Caulker-Belize, Tagging Crocodiles in Belize, and Papaya's and Piety in Belize."

ATM and Barton Creek get a good mention | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

"A moderately challenging wet cave, ATM is one of the best-preserved underground archeological sites in Belize.  There are over 1400 Mayan artifacts inside, mostly ceramic pottery, as well as the remains of 14 individuals."

Cayo is for Nature Lovers

Cayo is for Nature Lovers | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo was featured again on the Huffington Post and on International Living.   Mr. Greedy's, the Saturday market, and Rotary all got mentioned in the fact filled article.

"Geographically, the more than 2,000 square miles of this district offer everything from broad farmlands, gently rolling citrus orchards and cattle ranches to rugged mountains laced with caves and deep river gorges.  No wonder that along with agriculture, eco-tourism is now a mainstay of Cayo's economy.  Tourists are drawn by the many caves, waterfalls, and Maya archeological sites... more sites than any other district in Belize.  In fact, more than 60 percent of Cayo district is wildlife sanctuary, national park, or preserve."

Exploring Caves, Ruins, and Cuisine in Cayo

Exploring Caves, Ruins, and Cuisine in Cayo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

A great travel report.  Actun Tunichil Muknal amazed, as did Xunanatunich and Ka'ana's La Ceiba restaurant.

"After a good hour-long stretch, we hiked hundreds of feet to the top of the temple, where ancient royalty used to address their subjects gathered below.  Seeing the remains of such an ancient city in such solitude and serenity was a majestic experience. If we had been in Tulum or Chichen Itza, hordes of tourists would have been traipsing the steps, lining up for staged photographs.  But perched high atop Xunatunich, breathing in the tropical Belizean air, there was a sense of humbling beauty and connectedness to the past.  Each inhale contained thousands of years of history, and every exhale gave back to the many more to come."

Dr. Jaime Awe shows off Actun Tunichil Muknal

People have been asking if the artifacts in ATM, and the artifacts from Burns avenue are real.  If Dr. Awe says they are authentic, then they are authentic.  This is an old, but amazing video, and the music score really goes with the sights shown.
