RawSpa Eco-lodge in Bullet Tree Falls

There's a new eco-lodge in Bullet Tree Falls, and it's called the RawSpa.  They have a cool promo video for the lodge, and what better way to start than by rope swinging into the Mopan River.

Gaia Riverlodge Goes Fully Hydro

Gaia Riverlodge Goes Fully Hydro | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Gaia Riverlodge now gets all their electricity from hydropower.  They changed the name from Five Sisters - they get the energy from the Five Sisters falls - and renovated the entire lodge only one year ago.  They have a good reputation since the changeover, and get great reviews on Trip Advisor.  Definitely proving they are a true eco-lodge.

"Using the nearby Five Sisters waterfalls as their energy source, the GAÏA Riverlodge is now run entirely by hydropower energy, eliminating the need for electricity.  But don't worry, the hotel does have a back-up system, an eco-friendly one too that's battery-powered.  The GAÏA Riverlodge is also cultivating an on-site vegetable garden which will bring fresh, or 'hyper-local' as they call it, produce to the lodge's restaurants. Awesome."

"Have you heard of Black Rock Lodge? I hadn’t until I did a little research into the best hotels for budget travelers in the San Ignacio area...  It’s a small, off the grid hotel in the San Ignacio area of Belize that offers locally grown food, has a hydropower system and also uses solar power electricity.  How cool is that?"

Green luxury in the rainforest

Green luxury in the rainforest | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Meshak, one of Chaa Creek's best guides, gets mentioned in this article.

"The resort's Rainforest Medicine Trail was once the property of Don Elijio Panti, the last Maya shaman of Belize who died in 1996 at the age of 103.  It was when naturalist guide Meshak Elia took me there to learn about medicinal plants that I spotted the howlers in the trees alongside the river.

The copal tree, Meshak told me, was sacred to the Maya. They would collect and dry its sap, which was burned as ceremonial incense.  It was used by shamans to chase away bad spirits and attract good ones, and also as protection against the 'evil eye.'

That evening, I joined another small group Meshak was leading on the 'Creatures of the Night' tour.  Headlamp flashlights allowed us to pick our way down a path where, in addition to the hairy tarantula and the amorous toads, we also spotted a possum, leafcutter ants and several bats."

Ancient Maya Craft Revived at Chaa Creek

Ancient Maya Craft Revived at Chaa Creek | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Chaa Creek is doing something special for 2012.  They are making a stelae, maybe for when they are uncovered by archaeologists.

"The Maya, one of the world’s first literate people, created vast libraries and archives during the millennia-long span of their civilisation, most of which were destroyed by Spanish conquistadors in their zeal to remove “pagan” elements from their empire. Stone monuments known as stelae erected in cities and around temples were impervious enough to survive and have provided important clues from which historians have pieced together a picture of ancient Maya civilisation."

Five Sisters was bought recently.  We like the description: "Set on the banks of the white-water Privassion River, Five Sisters Lodge offers sanctuary and peace in a remarkable setting surrounded by the five majestic waterfalls that inspired its name. Imposing mountains provide a dramatic backdrop to Mayan ruins, dense rainforest, stalactite caverns and some of the most diverse wildlife on earth."

Vanilla Hills Lodge, a beautiful little eco-lodge located in Bullet Tree Falls, is getting some outstanding reviews.  They are small right now, with only 2 cabins, the Hibiscus and the Orchid, but another one is on the way.  They also have a line of cheeses, breads, and jams that are tasty and healthy.

See Nature Through my Eyes

See Nature Through my Eyes | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

It's great to read how much some kids, like Anthony Navarrete, love nature so much.  Eco Kid essay of the day.

"I want to be an eco-kid because I love nature; I simply love it!  Also, I would not want anything bad to happen to the environment in Belize because we have such beautiful forests and wildlife that we need to take pride in.  We have the nature reserves, the rainforests, the caves, the cayes and so much more in this beautiful country.  That’s why I want to be an eco kid!  I want to protect all of these things that this country has to offer.  Through this, I can also get to know the environment better and prevent things that would damage our environment like off shore drilling and deforestation."

Chaa Creek makes USA Today's top 10 list for eco-lodges

Chaa Creek makes USA Today's top 10 list for eco-lodges | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Congratulations to Chaa Creek!  They represented Belize in USA Today's top 10 list of eco-lodges.

“If you’d like more than 24 hours to celebrate Sunday’s Earth Day, maybe it’s time for an eco vacation. A growing number of lodges adhere to green values, offering nature adventures in a sustainable setting.  But you don’t have to rough it.  You’re not sleeping on a straw mat on a dirt floor.  There are opportunities to stay in very comfortable accommodations”

Ka'ana gets a great review...and has new pool villas

Ka'ana gets a great review...and has new pool villas | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Ka'ana has 2 new villas, and they have private pools!  They got an amazing write up too.

"In fact, the name means “heavenly place” in Mayan, and this 15-room, two-villa eco-resort is nothing short of extraordinary. In a lush valley between the Maya Mountains of the Cayo District, the property embodies the spirit of the Mayan natives, utilizing all locally sourced materials, serving food grown in their organic garden (all gourmet and spectacular, of course!), and embracing the aesthetics of the rich native culture. Belize’s natural wonders blend seamlessly with the Hannan brothers’ knack for luxury, as guests are equally encouraged to explore the surroundings and enjoy special touches, such as Western Belize’s largest wine cellar."

From backpackers to Princes – a real rags to riches story

From backpackers to Princes – a real rags to riches story | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Great article from Chaa Creek.  Some history is in there.

"While Belize’s love affair with the Royals hasn’t changed, Chaa Creek certainly has, with the Prince able to enjoy gourmet meals and fine wines from an excellent cellar. With 135 staff members on hand Prince Harry was well looked after, enjoying a professional massage from the Chaa Creek Spa, a visit to the onsite butterfly farm and quality amenities. 500 lit candles heralded the Price’s arrival.

'It was a wonderful visit and Prince Harry was a warm, appreciative guest who did seem to enjoy the Chaa Creek story,' Lucy Fleming said. 'And to us it really did bring home the fact that not all that long ago we had dirt floors, would kill a chicken for our guests’ dinner and had a staff of one – our neighbour’s son. I guess to go from backpackers to the Royal Family for guests is something, but to us it’s all just another part of the Chaa Creek story, and we couldn’t imagine life any other way.'"

Eco-friendly Ways to Travel the Globe

Eco-friendly Ways to Travel the Globe | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Chaa Creek has 5 concepts for trying to be eco-friendly while traveling.

"In our fast-paced, material-heavy modern world, it can be difficult enough at home to live sustainably: Practicing environmental and ecological ethics on the road is sometimes that much tougher. There’s less under our control; we’re often beholden to local practice and custom about which we know little; and we may, like it or not, be part of a massive tourist horde, the impacts of which are substantial."

Number 2 deals with researching tour companies: "Research tour companies you might want to enlist for a leg of the trip, and choose those businesses that practice sound environmental and cultural practices."

Chaa Creek Adventure in Belize

Chaa Creek Adventure in Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Not sure what they mean by, "We recommend Belize to any soft-adventure traveler," but it's a great Trip Advisor report.

"My highlight was when I was walking alone at dusk on the Rainforest Medicine Trail, when I heard ashuffle in the woods. I quietly peered closer into the tangle, and heard a low hiss. There was an animal on all fours looking at me – I had never seen anything like it! I thought I knew most animals that occurred here. I was so so excited! Not until I came back to the compound and checked the computer, did I find the name: Tayra. It’s in the weasel family (which it does resemble). Whoo Hoo – a lifer mammal."
