April the Tapir Celebrates 30 Years | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

World Tapir Day was this weekend, and the Belize Zoo crowned April the Tapir - ceremonially they crowned her paper mache double - as the new Miss Belize in honor of her 30th birthday.  The yearly event at the zoo was attended by 100's of students from around Belize, and the ceremonial crowning was done by four students from the Buena Vista school in Spanish Lookout.  April is the oldest living tapir in a zoo, already having outlived her life expectantcy by 5 years, in the world.  Happy birthday, April!

"To many of you watching this, the news that a new Miss Belize was crowned today will come as a big surprise.  The venue was the Belize Zoo and Education Center and the occasion was a very special one – the thirtieth birthday of a celebrity who over the years has become the face of the zoo.  Today News Five was invited to the birthday celebration of April the Tapir, and joined the many friends and guests there for what is always a memorable event."

Jaguar Education from Belize Zoo

Jaguar Education from Belize Zoo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Belize Zoo has been having an awareness campaign about jaguars and their protected status.  They went to Caledonia village, where a jaguar was poached recently, and spoke at the local school to the children.  Thanks, TBZ!

"it's a follow up to the incident that happened in the village several weeks ago and the objective was to turn it into something positive to involve this community that have these jaguars and other wildlife very near their community and interact with them probably on a daily basis and the whole concept is simply education and awareness making them have a sense of pride and respect for these animals that they live in close contact with every single day and for them to understand our value in the conservation of our forest and in all the industries that its connected to."

Facebook Education by Frank Palacio

Facebook Education by Frank Palacio | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Frank Palacio has a book out entitled 'Facebook Education: From Middle School to Old School and From the USA to Belize.  It looks at Facebook from a teacher's perspective, and how it can be used as a tool.

"Facebook, the social networking juggernaut that has become as universal as the company’s iconic lowercased f, has a new pitchman.  Meet Frank Palacio, a Belizean writer living abroad. His latest publication is essentially a user’s guide to the website responsible for connecting almost a billion users worldwide.  Palacio’s encouragement?  Promoting a previous volume on his memorable experiences in the classroom.  As a teacher, he disliked the pervasiveness of the burgeoning medium but soon discovered that Facebook also helped him to stay in touch with friends and family virtually anywhere there is an internet hot spot."

Voluntourism is huge in Cayo

Voluntourism is huge in Cayo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Voluntourism is a huge moneymaker in Cayo, and Belize in general.  If someone had a good channel of communication, they could really make a fortune.  $800usd for 2 weeks, which covers a dormatory stay(not a hotel), and a few meals a week.  You'd think that would cover the bus.  Paying to volunteer 6 hours a day...

"Belize reports a high enrollment rate at primary school level (Girls 95.9, Boys 94.6) suggesting a significant level of achievement. However, there are a number of challenges related to quality and disparity that must be addressed."

Thread By Thread

Thread By Thread | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

A graduate of Sacred Heart Junior College has come up with a great idea, following the 'pay it forward' concept.  Thread by Thread is a nonprofit that donates school uniforms to children that can't afford them.  Awesome idea!

"The expression 'pay it forward' is used to describe the concept of asking that a good deed be repaid by having a good deed done for others instead.  Thread by thread is a nonprofit company dedicated to making sure Belizean school children whose families cannot afford material goods have both what they need to attend school and also learn to share the giving by giving themselves.  By helping students obtain school uniforms we hope that each student will be driven to further his or her education.  By giving the uniforms we hope each student absorbs the mind set of being grateful for what he or she receives.  By requiring recipients to 'pay it forward' we hope that in return for our gift, they will learn that giving brings more value than just the dollar amount of what was received.  We are about 'Making Threads by Giving Threads.'"

Galen and UNC Wilmington Partner for Public Archaeology Education

Galen and UNC Wilmington Partner for Public Archaeology Education | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo's Galen University is partnering with the University of North Carolina at Wilmington for a Public Archaeology Education Program.

"The partnership is a public education program geared towards young minds to enlighten and introduce them to the field of Archaeology and Anthropology and encourage them to consider those studies for their future as well as to educate them about the importance of studying our history and preserving archaeological sites for future generations.  Dr. Scott Simmons of UNCW along with archaeology students Victor Cucul and Ismael Teul of Galen University served as “Ambassadors of the Past”, visiting the various schools on Ambergris Caye and talking about the history and culture of past civilizations, specifically the Maya, who were the original inhabitants of this entire region and whose impact and civilizations are still evident today."

David Connolly's comment, January 2, 2013 6:30 AM
