No more taxpayer subsidies for our failing nuclear reactors!

No more taxpayer subsidies for our failing nuclear reactors! | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
New York state recently set a terrible example by approving a $7.6 billion bailout of failing nuclear power plants, writes PETER BRADFORD. But other states aren't following. including California and Nebraska, where a host of highly competitive clean energy technologies are filling in the power shortfall left by nuclear closures, at much lower cost. It's time to let old nuclear reactors die.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
According to Renewable Energy Portfolio Standards, In the U.S., solar and wind receive 140 and 17 times higher levels of subsidy than nuclear. Nuclear power plants do not meet the break-even point from cradle to grave and the decommissioning of the plant is an even greater urden on tax payers. Solar companies can provide solar modules for to residential homeowners at no upfront cost, unless homeowners want to own it, when they meet the requirement to qualify for the subsidy. Corn for ethanol and petroleum receive federal subsidies to make those forms of energy seem affordable, and companies invested in these subsidized energy sources all receive tax credits which are economic development subsidies that reduce company taxes to the federal government which is then passed on upfront to the consumer market.

Before acceptance to CSUCI in 2015, my studies at Moorpark College emphasized renewable energy where I prepared for the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) entry level and certificate test. Spring 2014, I was deceived by Moorpark to think I'd have a career installing solar and wind energy. In order to sit for the tests, course credits must have been earned at an accredited institution. Moorpark was unaccredited, still is to this day, and Outback Solar in Washington would not allow me to their program either to learn installation of bimodal battery storage. In our opinion polls, I received no opinions that objected to the closing of California nuclear power facilities, it is highly agreed it is the right thing to do.

PUC calls for revisions in San Onofre shutdown cost settlement

PUC calls for revisions in San Onofre shutdown cost settlement | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
An agreement on paying for the closure of the San Onofre nuclear power plant near San Clemente needs to be more favorable to consumers, state regulators said Friday.
PIRatE Lab's insight:

When we calculate the direct costs (leaving aside the issues related to waste internment and multi-millenium storage of highly radioactive substances) of nuclear power, decommissioning must be in the equation.  I have found such costs rarely are accounted for.  When they are the estimates are typically rarely close to the actual amounts we have seen (e.g. >$4 billion for this SONGS example).
