Although they appear to be perfectly capable of taking care of themselves, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering extending Endangered Species Act protection to 11 tarantula species native to India and Sri Lanka.

While these species are not indigenous to the U.S., this story caught my eye. We are doing more and more with spiders in coastal systems. They appear to be key indicatores of wetland, riparian, and grassland eosystem function. Spiders are key predators and respond to the overall condition of our ecosystems.
