Big news from Getty Images —Educators Embed Many Images for Free | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Getty Images’ new embed tool is huge news for those of us who look for great images to use in teaching, digital storytelling and presentation.

Why huge?

We’re talking 35 million photographs. Up until right now, over the course of years, some folks paid serious money for the use of this art.  Other folks have not."

Beth Dichter's insight:

This is amazing news for teachers and students...access to phenomenal images at no cost. Joyce Valenza provides an excellent overview of how to use the website and the background to this decision. Learn more from the post and then head over to Getty Images and have fun exploring.

A “Ripping” Fine New Year

A “Ripping” Fine New Year | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
My New Year’s Resolution: In 2013, I’ll be “ripping” DVDs to make clip compilations for media literacy. And I’ll be encouraging K-12 teachers, school librarians, and t...
Beth Dichter's insight:

Did you know that K12 teachers may now "rip" DVD clips for use in the classroom? That's right. This post provides information on this ruling as well as a link to software that is free that will allow you to rip DVDs as well as directions on how to do so. There is a brief history and a clear note that this will come up for review and that it is a use it or lose it proposition. If we do not use it we may lose this option.

Digital Ethics

Digital Ethics | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

May I download and use music? Is it okay to copy and use a poem from a textbook? May I use video clips from a television show? What is "Fair Use"? What is ethical behavior in the digital age? How is plagiarism defined? How can it be detected? The links below provide answers and insights to these questions.  http://its.leesummit.k12.mo.us/digitalethic.htm

Miguel Baca's curator insight, March 17, 2018 2:42 PM

How young do we have to teach kids about plagiarism these days? And is it supremely important in this world today? Yes and no. On one hand the world decides what can be counted as plagiarism and what cannot. On the other hand, ONCE AGAIN, almost everything is game for accusations of plagiarism. I think even a children’s novel these days is as vulnerable to this as is something as huge as a movie or a piece of music. I’ll just end this scoop.it with a question... What are your thoughts on how the worlds works with copyrights and plagiarism?

A Copyright-Friendly Toolkit

A Copyright-Friendly Toolkit | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
A true digital citizen understands how to ethically use the works of others to build his or her own creative products—music, art, video,...
Beth Dichter's insight:

Today we want our students to create, yet we know they do this by remixing and reusing "intellectual property" from others. Do they understand the need to give credit where credit is due. This toolkit provides a wide range of resources to help them make the correct decision (or to help you teach them how to make that decision). Sections include:

* What is Creative Commons?
* How to find Creative Commons content? Remember, content may include images, audio, video and YouTube (as examples). This section is quite robust in providing access to many resources, including portal for music, images and video as well as favorite sources for images and sounds.

* What do those Creative Commons License icons mean?

* Creative Commons licenses are for you too! What if your students create content and license it under Creative Commons?

* Public Domain resources

* Fair Use

* And more!

This is a great resource that is probably best for older students but the resources will guide you to locations that you may use with younger students also.
