Why Do People Keep Saying MOOCs Are Dead? - MOOCs - Think Massively

Why Do People Keep Saying MOOCs Are Dead? - MOOCs - Think Massively | Everything open | Scoop.it

For more than a year now, ever since Udacity’s famous “pivot,” it seems like at least once a week a new article comes out proclaiming that MOOCs are dead, that they failed and are now being buried (no doubt to the collective relief of higher education institutions and training departments everywhere).

inspiration4kidz's curator insight, February 1, 2015 12:27 PM

And as our students become more and more comfortable learning in online environments, they will continue to grow in popularity.

KCenter SKEMA's curator insight, February 3, 2015 10:43 AM

"Building a Global Open Education Working Group from Marieke Guy

An interesting discussion took place as part of the day 1 panel session on whether communities are built or just evolve. It’s clear that there is no right and wrong here and there are many subtleties, but the Twitter comments made are noteworthy:

* Community is like that place in the park where people gather…we can’t build it

* It not simple to create open communities which are not localised as species often geographically specific

* I don’t think they just happen, maybe they need to be ‘nurtured’ or ‘fostered

* Master plan communities in the states – everything is planned out. And then a wall and gate around it. That’s not a community

* Do we actually build a community? Communities happen.

* Discussion of can we build community? Or are we just making links?

* But when you link communities, aren’t you ‘building’ a new community anyway?

* Surely people will do what people we do, and we offer resources to help them. We don’t “build” communities.

Who are the Open Learners? A Comparative Study Profiling non-Formal Users of Open Educational Resources |European Journal of Open, Distance ... | Everything open | Scoop.it

With all the fuss about MOOCs over the last few years efforts like iTunes University have been lost in the shuffle. The closed platform didn't exactly make iTunesU feel 'open', but it was and is widely popular. And for today's analysis, the difference in usage patterns is revealing. Viewers skew younger, less educated, and less formal. And they reflect some trends also found in other open education resource (OER) efforts. For example: while many factors influence selection, licensing and attractive presentation aren't high on the list. Also, a significant number of people feel their needs are being met without the need for formal learning. And online assessment doesn't appear to be a major motivating factor.

Presentation by Martin Weller
Professor of Educational Technology, Institute of Educational Technology Open University

Introduced  by Ella Mitchell and Sarah Bridgman .

The OER Research Hub has been investigating the impact of OERs, using eleven hypotheses, and a mixed methods approach to establish an evidence base. This talk explores the findings relating to teaching and learning. The findings reveal a set of direct impacts, including an increase in factors relating to student performance, increased reflection on the part of educators, and the use of OER to trial and supplement formal study. There are also indirect impacts, whose benefits will be seen after several iterations.

Open Education Handbook Update | Open Education Working Group

Open Education Handbook Update | Open Education Working Group | Everything open | Scoop.it

The Open Education Handbook was conceived as an intended deliverable for the LinkedUp Project. The LinkedUp [http://linkedup-project.eu/ ] Description of Work describes the ‘LinkedUp Handbook on Open Data in Education’ as a “resource for both educators and Web data providers as well as adopters….The Linked Up Handbook will be created as a living document to reflect project learnings and findings, which will help others, both during the project and beyond it“.

To fulfill this brief the handbook has evolved to consider the broader scope of open education resulting in it being renamed as ‘the Open Education Handbook‘ [ http://education.okfn.org/handbook/ ].

Experiences and best practices in and around MOOCs

Why are MOOCs innovative? They provide alternative ways for students to gain new knowledge according to a given curriculum. MOOCs can also enhance learners’ ability to think creatively to select and adapt a paradigm to solve the problem at hand. These are the main findings of a case study on the Discrete Optimization MOOC on Coursera.

Education - Creative Commons

Education - Creative Commons | Everything open | Scoop.it

Creative Commons licenses provide a flexible range of protections and freedoms for authors, artists, and educators.

With the internet, universal access to education is possible, but its potential is hindered by increasingly restrictive copyright laws and incompatible technologies. The Education program at Creative Commons works to minimize these barriers, supporting the CC mission through consulting, education, and outreach on using the right technologies and licenses to maximize the benefits of open educational resources (OER) and the return on investment in publicly funded education and research programs. Our work cuts across all levels of education (K-12 to postsecondary) and sectors of industry (nonprofit to corporate)..
