A Podcast on Tablet Magazine about Jonathan Eig's book, "The Birth of the Pill: How Four Crusaders Reinvented Sex and Launched a Revolution" was enlightening.
Here I'd been thinking it was my friend Harry's father Max de Winter (1920-2012) who created "De Pil", to discover the Americans were just a bit ahead of the Netherlands.
De Winter survived Auschwitz thanks to his technical skills in a Siemens factory. Post WWII he worked as scientist for pharmaceutical company Organon in Oss, NL.

After Syntex produced The Pill in the U.S., approved by the FDA in 1957 to treat menstrual disorders, and in 1960 as contraceptive, we Dutch got our own Lyndion® in 1962 thanks to the Winter and his team. My "Dolle Mina" (feminist) mother took pride in getting De Pil covered by health insurance, just in time for her daughter to benefit.

Freedom Whore – Abortion, Shame, and The Right To Deny Me My Rights by Martha Plimpton

Freedom Whore – Abortion, Shame, and The Right To Deny Me My Rights by Martha Plimpton | Herstory | Scoop.it

Many people might end up taking issue with my point of view here or how I’m expressing it. That will happen. I can’t, nor am I intending to, speak for every single person affected by the majestic tentacles of misogyny and patriarchy that reach out in all directions and attempt to suffocate the life out of any sense of shared outrage or mutual support of each other’s struggle with either. Plus, I admit, my thinking is not particularly nuanced on a day like today. Like a lot of people, I’m mostly just pissed.

As Obamacare’s Birth Control Benefit Hits Its One-Year Anniversary, It’s Helping 27 Million Women

As Obamacare’s Birth Control Benefit Hits Its One-Year Anniversary, It’s Helping 27 Million Women | Herstory | Scoop.it

One year ago, one of Obamacare’s most popular provisions took effect — the rule requiring insurers to cover women’s preventative health services, like birth control and Pap smears, at no additional charge. Through this provision, Obamacare has helped prevent women from continuing to pay disproportionately more for their health care than men do, since women are no longer charged a co-pay for the wide range of preventative services they need.

Roman Polanski Says the Pill Killed Romance, Women Say it Gave Them Control Over Their Lives

Roman Polanski Says the Pill Killed Romance, Women Say it Gave Them Control Over Their Lives | Herstory | Scoop.it

Director Roman Polanski made headlines this weekend at the Cannes Film Festival, where he was debuting his new film Venus in Fur. The movie, which is based on a play by David Ives and stars Polanski’s wife, focuses on the relationship between a feminine actress and the macho director who she slowly begins to control. Discussing the film’s themes of gender and gender roles, Polanski told the press that he is not pleased with how the sexes act with one another today. “I think that now offering flowers to a lady becomes indecent, that’s how I feel about it. I think to level the genders—it’s purely idiotic,” he said. “I think it’s a result of progress in medicine. I think that the Pill has changed greatly the woman of our times, ‘masculinizing’ her. I think that it chases away the romance from our lives and that’s a great pity.”

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

I don't think he knows what "romance" means. Isn't sex without the fear of unwanted pregnancy more romantic than the other way around?

Your Phone Wants You To Have Sex Now | Herstory | Scoop.it

There’s an app for that? Now your phone tells you when to have sex.

[T]he new trend in this technology is tracking something that women have monitored for centuries – the menstrual cycle. Given some basic information, apps like Kindara tell women when to have sex so they can plan or prevent pregnancy.
