Who killed Amy Dudley?

Who killed Amy Dudley? | Herstory | Scoop.it
Did Queen Elizabeth I murder her lover’s wife?

Queen Elizabeth the First was known as ‘the virgin queen’  but it’s unlikely this was the case. It’s true that she never married by most historians believe that she had a long-time affair with Sir Robert Dudley.

Elizabeth and Robert had known each other since childhood and were the very best of friends. When she

Two Big Frauds: I Pretended to Be Pregnant at a Crisis Pregnancy Center

Two Big Frauds: I Pretended to Be Pregnant at a Crisis Pregnancy Center | Herstory | Scoop.it
In reality, however, they’re often the opposite: disseminating misinformation and, in the process, robbing women of their autonomy. And the best worst part of the situation is the fact that plenty of crisis pregnancy centers, in spite of their duplicity, are actually licensed community clinics, which gives them an added air of respectability.

So, in the interest of trying to understand what actually goes on in these inexplicably legal establishments, I decided to go undercover as a preggers patsy.

The Anti-Lynching Pamphlets of Ida B. Wells, 1892-1920

The Anti-Lynching Pamphlets of Ida B. Wells, 1892-1920 | Herstory | Scoop.it

Pamphlets written by Ida B. Wells-Barnett on the subject of lynching comprise a substantial body of innovative writing, reporting, and analysis in U.S. intellectual history. In the 1890s especially, nascent professional social scientists, media opinion shapers, and leaders in the black community acknowledged and relied on her work.1 Indeed, Ida B. Wells-Barnett's foundational insights into the complex social dynamics behind the lynching for rape scenario have stood the test of time in the more than one hundred years since she penned them; yet her status and recognition as a social critic in the ensuing years has been embattled, to say the least.2 At her death in 1931, for example, W.E.B. Du Bois wrote in National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's (NAACP) journal, The Crisis, that her work had been "easily forgotten" and "taken to greater success" by others.3 Wells-Barnett herself complained in a diary of the neglect of "my anti-lynching contribution" in early black history textbooks penned by the influential scholar Carter G. Woodson.4 This essay suggests that rather than comprising a "forgotten" body work, Ida B. Wells-Barnett's pamphlet writings were appropriated and transformed by peers and colleagues in social reform. In turn, they marginalized her as author and leader.

When Evangelicalism Makes Things Easy For Sexual Offenders – and Hard for Their Victims

When Evangelicalism Makes Things Easy For Sexual Offenders – and Hard for Their Victims | Herstory | Scoop.it
by Libby Anne cross posted from her blog Love, Joy Feminism

Evangelical teachings on repentance and forgiveness create a tremendous problem when it comes to rape or other forms of abuse. If you commit a sin and repent of it, God forgives you. I remember hearing Psalm 103:12 quoted constantly: “As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” Of course, this was always said in a positive way—isn’t it awesome that God forgives us no matter what? But it doesn’t must mean God forgives us. It also means God forgives rapists, child molesters, and so on—fully and completely.

The shocking testimony of soldiers who rape

The shocking testimony of soldiers who rape | Herstory | Scoop.it
“When we rape we feel free”, a young soldier in the Congolese Army confesses with astonishing candour. In a country where it’s estimated that 48 women are raped every hour, his actions have become virtually the norm, and not the exception. The Democratic Republic of Congo has born the brunt of vicious wars and fighting almost continuously since 1996, concentrated in the east of the country. One of the reasons the women repeat to anyone who bothers to ask them is: “where there’s fighting there’s rape”.

800 Dead Babies Discovered in Septic Tank Of Home for Unwed Mothers | Herstory | Scoop.it
Police are investigating the discovery of 800 long-dead babies found in the septic tank at a home for unwed mothers in western Ireland. The Home (that is its actual name and, yes, it does sound freakishly ominous) housed thousands of pregnant and unwed — "fallen"— women between 1925 and 1961. The women left after they'd paid for their stay in indentured servitude. Their children, reports The Washington Post, may not have been so lucky.

Barkers and Beagles, 1930s

Barkers and Beagles, 1930s | Herstory | Scoop.it

When the TV show DuckTales debuted in September 1987, twenty-six years ago this month, it brought with it the infamous Beagle Boys and their matriarch, Ma Beagle. These were the main antagonists of Uncle Scrooge McDuck and his wards, Huey, Dewey, and Louie. The whole world that DuckTales existed within was born from the pen of Carl Barks, the writer of Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories, with the debut of the pen-and-ink Beagle Boys hailing all the way from 1951.

In the book Carl Barks and the Disney Comic Book a quote from Carl says the original Beagle Boys were based on “Capone’s gang and the different bunch of hoodlums around the country,” the kind of criminals that Banks would have read about in the news while growing up. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, the combined impacts of Prohibition and the Great Depression brought out the worst in society, birthing the likes of Bonnie and Clyde, John Dillinger and his gang, and the Ma Baker Gang.

Yakiri Rubio Killed Her Rapist in Self-Defense—Now She May Go to Prison | VICE United States | Herstory | Scoop.it

Via Doingtime2, Deanna Dahlsad
Doingtime2's curator insight, March 8, 2014 7:09 PM

Where is the justice? In Yakiri Rubio's case there are anomalies.

According to the Commission for Human Rights in Mexico City, the actions of the Prosecutor’s Office and the magistrate’s court "were focused on prosecuting a capital murder crime and ignoring a sexual violence crime."

When Yakiri entered the Prosecutor’s Office, she didn't get a test to confirm she had been raped. She was not even allowed to call her family. Lucia Lagunes Huerta, the director of CIMAC, a feminist news agency, told me that the written law and the implemented law are different things. "There is a certain logic in the world that women don't matter and that violence against us is provoked by us," said Huerta.

When I called the District Attorney's office in Mexico City (PGJDF), they wouldn't comment. But Rodolfo Ríos Garza, a member of the PGJDF, had said in a press conference: “We have statements in the previous investigation, where she enters the hotel willingly with someone and therefore there is no evidence of rape."

The judge who sentenced her to prison, Santiago Avila Negron, was accused of corruption and sexual harassment in 2004.

Dorothy Stratten was the focus of the dreams and ambitions of three men. One killed her.

“The major reason that I’m … that we’re both sittin’ here,” says Hefner, “that I wanted to talk about it, is because there is still a great tendency … for this thing to fall into the classic cliché of ‘smalltown girl comes to Playboy, comes to Hollywood, life in the fast lane,’ and that was somehow related to her death. And that is not what really happened. A very sick guy saw his meal ticket and his connection to power, whatever, slipping away. And it was that that made him kill her.”

An Open Letter From Dylan Farrow

An Open Letter From Dylan Farrow | Herstory | Scoop.it
Dylan Farrow, Woody Allen’s adoptive daughter, speaks out about her experience.

For as long as I could remember, my father had been doing things to me that I didn’t like. I didn’t like how often he would take me away from my mom, siblings and friends to be alone with him. I didn’t like it when he would stick his thumb in my mouth. I didn’t like it when I had to get in bed with him under the sheets when he was in his underwear. I didn’t like it when he would place his head in my naked lap and breathe in and breathe out. I would hide under beds or lock myself in the bathroom to avoid these encounters, but he always found me. These things happened so often, so routinely, so skillfully hidden from a mother that would have protected me had she known, that I thought it was normal. I thought this was how fathers doted on their daughters. But what he did to me in the attic felt different. I couldn’t keep the secret anymore.

When I asked my mother if her dad did to her what Woody Allen did to me, I honestly did not know the answer. I also didn’t know the firestorm it would trigger. I didn’t know that my father would use his sexual relationship with my sister to cover up the abuse he inflicted on me. I didn’t know that he would accuse my mother of planting the abuse in my head and call her a liar for defending me. I didn’t know that I would be made to recount my story over and over again, to doctor after doctor, pushed to see if I’d admit I was lying as part of a legal battle I couldn’t possibly understand. At one point, my mother sat me down and told me that I wouldn’t be in trouble if I was lying – that I could take it all back. I couldn’t. It was all true. But sexual abuse claims against the powerful stall more easily. There were experts willing to attack my credibility. There were doctors willing to gaslight an abused child.
