we present images not of Washington and Lincoln, or even of any of the presidents, but rather the Presiding Ladies of the White House, a biographical album by Lila G. A. Woolfall, with an introduction by noted author and editor Margaret Elizabeth Sangster, published in 1903 by the Bureau of National Literature and Art in Washington, DC. We decided to focus on women related to presidents who aren’t so commonly discussed. Lizzie Black was born in Milwaukee in 1858, the daughter of John and Mary Black, who were Jewish pioneer farmers from near Green Bay. She was educated in the Milwaukee public schools and in 1878 graduated from East Side High as valedictorian.
