What we know about false rape allegations

What we know about false rape allegations | Herstory | Scoop.it

For one thing, research has finally nailed down a consistent range for how many reports of rape are false: somewhere between 2 and 8 percent, which is a lot narrower than the 1.5 percent to 90 percent range of the past. But it's also shown that the cultural debate over rape shapes the reality of how rapes are reported and investigated.

THIS IS OUT OF HANDS IN MY MIND. THERE YOU GO GENDER DIFFERENCES. WOMEN CAN LIE ABOUT RAPE AND EVERYONE WILL BELIEVE HER, AND THAT’S CRAZY. I KNOW IT’S NOT SIMPLE AS THAT, BUT TO WORD IT SIMPLY THAT’S HOW IT LOOKS. THERE ARE TWO THINGS I TOOK FROM THIS ARTICLE: ONE IS THAT 2 TO 8 PERCENT OF WOMEN LYING ABOUT THEM BEING RAPED, AND SECOND IS THAT REALITY SHOWS THAT RAPE REPORTS THAT TURN OUT TO BE FALSE ARE MORE LIKELY TO INVOLVE STRANGERS AND VIOLENCE.

But what's Sexual assault in the first place?

Sexual assault can be verbal, visual, or anything that forces a person to join in unwanted sexual contact or attention. Examples of this are voyeurism (when someone watches private sexual acts), exhibitionism (when someone exposes him/herself in public), incest (sexual contact between family members), and sexual harassment. It can happen in different situations:  in the home by someone you know, on a date, or by a stranger in an isolated place.

This Intense Short Film About Sexual Abuse Will Destroy Your Silence Forever

In India, a woman is sexually assaulted every three minutes and raped every 20 minutes. However, many Indian women are afraid to speak up, fearing retribution from the very same monsters who abused them, and harsh judgement from an insensitive society.

A recent short film by Pooja Batura that’s making waves around the internet is telling them to do exactly the opposite. The film is simply titled “Bol” and captures the different kinds of sexual abuse an Indian woman suffers from during her lifetime, from child abuse to work place harassment to marital rape.  The message is clear and simple, “The more you talk, the less it will happen.”

On the idea of ‘winning the girl’

On the idea of ‘winning the girl’ | Herstory | Scoop.it

Indeed, the idea of ‘winning the girl’ – of overcoming female objections or resistance through repeated and frequently escalating efforts – is central to most of our modern romantic narratives. (Female persistence, by contrast, is viewed as pathetic.) And the more I think about instances of creepiness, harassment and stalking that culminate in either the threat or actuality of sexual assault, the more I’m convinced that a massive part of the problem is this socially sanctioned idea that men are fundamentally entitled to persist.

When Castro states that the women he kidnapped were not virgins before he raped them, he is implying that their status is somehow lessened because of this. He’s trying to say that because these women had previously engaged in sexual relationships (god forbid!) their value isn’t as important as women who are virgins.

No, You Cannot Substitute ‘Sex’ For ‘Rape’ | Herstory | Scoop.it

On Friday afternoon, the Associated Press ran a story about a young woman in Washington state who alleges that her high school’s officials failed to protect her from a 16-year-old boy who raped her on school property, and even allowed the boy to remain in the same classroom with her after her guardian reported she was being harassed by him. The school continues to deny most of her claims, and she is seeking at least $400,000 in damages.

In its headline about the story, the AP chose to characterize the encounter — which took place in a bathroom at the high school — as “restroom sex”:

Letter from Another Jane Doe | Herstory | Scoop.it

Guest post by Lenora Davis [Note: Trigger warning for rape.]

I can’t remember what was worse: the denial or the guilt. For months I walked around numb, refusing to acknowledge what had happened, refusing to give it a name, to refer to it, because once I said it, it would become real.

The day that he raped me was the worst day of my life. He dehumanized me, he made me feel little and helpless and vulnerable.

Shame on CNN: Apologize for Steubenville coverage (petition).

Shame on CNN: Apologize for Steubenville coverage (petition). | Herstory | Scoop.it

Yesterday a guilty verdict was handed down in the Steubenville rape case, where a 16-year-old girl was raped repeatedly by boys on a high school football team. The verdict was the beginning of justice for this brave young girl, but CNN's coverage was awful.

The entire CNN panel, including Candy Crowley, reporter Poppy Harlow and legal analyst Paul Callan focused on what a tragedy this was for the boys and what a shame it was that their lives had been ruined--as if the rape was some sort of unfortunate accident and they hadn't committed a very serious, very invasive and very life-altering for the survivor, crime.

CNN didn't focus on what this verdict meant for Jane Doe--only sad reflections on the "destroyed" lives of these boys--boys who were caught on tape raping a girl. This is wrong and CNN owes us all an apology. Can you add your name to the petition?
