“The cloud” was a big tech buzzword about a decade ago. Everything would be accessible everywhere. And that more or less happened — with a little prep work and a decent connection, you can access pretty much anything from anywhere, from your resume .doc file to a collection of movies to full streaming PC games. But, according to recently revealed information, Microsoft is looking into streaming all of Windows to client PCs from cloud-based servers. Microsoft will add contextual searches to Bing, powered by its own version of the ChatGPT algorithm. Microsoft will also integrate a separate, dedicated chat interface for Bing, complete with footnoted links. Finally, AI will be integrated into Edge, allowing to summarize a financial earnings report, for example. Bing’s new search engine interface is live, but to a limited number of people. It will expand in the coming weeks.

Flaws in networkd-dispatcher, a service used in the Linux world, can be exploited by a rogue logged-in user or application to escalate their privileges to root level, allowing the box to be commandeered, Microsoft researchers said Wednnesday.
It's nice of Redmond to point out these flaws and have them fixed in any affected distributions; the US tech giant is a big user of Linux and relies on the open-source OS throughout its empire. It's just a little perplexing the biz went to all the effort of a big write-up and giving the flaws a catchy name, Nimbuspwn, when countless privilege-elevation holes are fixed in its Windows operating system each month, and we can't recall Microsoft lately making this much of a song and dance over them. Microsoft has continued its analysis of the LemonDuck malware, known for installing crypto-miners in enterprise environments. It makes a strong case for why it is worth removing it from your network.
This group, according to Microsoft, has a well-stocked arsenal of hacking tools, tricks and exploits aimed at one thing: for their malware to retain exclusive access to a compromised network for as long as possible.
While crypto-mining malware could be just a nuisance, LemonDuck attributes suggest the attacker group really do try to own compromised networks by disabling anti-malware, removing rival malware, and even automatically patching vulnerabilities -- a competitive effort to keep rival attackers from feeding off its turf. Microsoft is warning customers about the LemonDuck crypto mining malware which is targeting both Windows and Linux systems and is spreading via phishing emails, exploits, USB devices, and brute force attacks, as well as attacks targeting critical on-premise Exchange Server vulnerabilities uncovered in March.
The group was discovered to be using Exchange bugs to mine for cryptocurrency in May, two years after it first emerged.
Notably, the group behind LemonDuck is taking advantage of high-profile security bugs by exploiting older vulnerabilities during periods where security teams are focussed on patching critical flaws, and even removing rival malware.

Eliza Strickland 27/04/16 : "Bodies are fragile and prone to the eventual failure known as death. But the DNA that encodes all the instructions for creating and operating those perishable bodies ? That stuff sticks around. Thanks to 7000-year-old DNA from a tooth found in a Spanish cave, for example, we know that the “caveman” who died there had blue eyes and was probably lactose intolerant. Now Microsoft is making an investment in DNA data storage, a cutting-edge technique that takes advantage of genetic material’s durability and efficiency. The company has taken a chunk of data that would normally be stored in a file on a hard drive, and has translated it into the genetic code...

Microsoft has announced a new multiyear partnership with Mistral, a French AI startup that’s valued at €2 billion (about $2.1 billion). The Financial Times reports that the partnership will include Microsoft taking a minor stake in the 10-month-old AI company, just a little over a year after Microsoft invested more than $10 billion into its OpenAI partnership.

Bing AI is now open to all—sort of. Three months after debuting its revamped search engine, Microsoft has announced that it's now moving into open preview. You'll still need to sign into Bing on the Edge browser (or the Bing mobile apps) to use the chatbot, but at least you no longer have to deal with a waitlist.
As if to celebrate this new phase of Bing (powered by OpenAI's GPT-4), Microsoft is also rolling out several new features. For one, it can go beyond mere text responses to deliver charts, graphs and rich formatting. The Bing Image Creator, which taps into DALL-E to craft AI-generated pictures, also now supports the more than 100 languages that Bing's standard search offers.

MICROSOFT’S SEARCH ENGINE, Bing, is getting an AI refresh. At the company’s campus in Redmond, Washington, today, executives unveiled a new version of Bing incorporating technology behind startup OpenAI’s viral chatbot ChatGPT. The updates will see Bing results include smooth, written responses to queries that summarize information found on the web, and the addition of a new chatbot interface for complex queries.

Microsoft has been working with OpenAI since 2019, before OpenAI became a massive hit with its AI services such as ChatGPT and DALL-E, but now Microsoft has said it will be extending that partnership with a multi-year, multi-billion dollar investment.
The investment will continue to fund the AI research company's research and specifically develop AI that is "increasingly safe, useful and powerful," according to OpenAI.

Microsoft is acquiring CloudKnox Security to help build out its cloud security and Zero Trust strategy for an undisclosed amount, officials announced on July 21. Officials said they will provide more information on what they'll be doing with CloudKnox's technology as they integrate it with Microsoft's existing identity, security, and compliance services, including Microsoft 365 Defender, Azure Defender, and Azure Sentinel.
CloudKnox Security is based in Sunnyvale, CA. Its security platform supports the monitoring and management of identities, actions, and resources in hybrid and multi-cloud environments, according to its web site. CloudKnow has been a big AWS partner. Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren: https://www.scoop.it/t/21st-century-innovative-technologies-and-developments/?&tag=Acquisitions

Jason Ward 13/04/17 : I don't believe Microsoft will ever release a Surface Phone. I do believe Microsoft will launch a category-defining ultimate mobile device that will play to the company's strengths rather than its proven weakness. Smartphones are Microsoft's Achilles Heel. Thus, Microsoft's ultimate mobile device will not be a phone...

The tech world, Burger explained, was moving into a new orbit. In the future, a few giant Internet companies would operate a few giant Internet services so complex and so different from what came before that these companies would have to build a whole new architecture to run them. They would create not just the software driving these services, but the hardware, including servers and networking gear. Project Catapult would equip all of Microsoft’s servers—millions of them—with specialized chips that the company could reprogram for particular tasks.
