So what are we doing with all the time we spend online, and how do we know all that time is being spent in useful ways?

For many of us, the internet is among the first things we experience after we wake; in fact, 75% of users are online before 9 a.m. Over 75% of people in the US own a laptop, 53% a smart phone, and 31% a tablet. Email is the most common action performed by people on their laptops, while search is the top action for mobile phone and tablet users. 72% of people like to play games on their tablets while 70% use their mobile phones for social media. Where do we use these devices? 72% of people use their mobile phones while traveling, and 64% use them in restaurants and coffee shops. As for tablets, 88% of people use their devices in the living room, 79% in the bedroom.

Digital marketing has become one of the most focused on streams of marketing in the last few years. Three of the biggest digital marketing issues include social network marketing, mobile, SMS marketing, and content marketing. Here’s a brief look at each:

Social Network Marketing

As a marketing, you can rely on social media to connect, engage, and build relationships with current and potential customers.

Mobile / SMS Marketing

Mobile marketing is a term that covers several different methods of marketing through mobile devices. Mobile marketing can take several different shapes but one of the most popular is SMS marketing.

Content Marketing

Content marketing is the development of interesting and helpful materials to engage customers and clients. Examples of content can be blogs, infographics, online tools, YouTube videos etc.

This infographic displays some eye-opening statistics about these 3 digital marketing streams and might get you thinking more about including these streams into your marketing mix.

The Second Screen Phenomena – Infographic

The Second Screen Phenomena – Infographic | Information Technology & Social Media News | Scoop.it

Second screen viewing, which refers to using an additional electronic device while watching television, is a widespread consumer behavior that has quickly become the norm.

In an attempt to better understand this trend, Viaccess-Orca has analyzed second screen usage amongst diverse populations of television viewers. The results, which appear in this infographic, demonstrate the extent to which second screen viewing is altering the TV industry. According to our data, 70% of tablet owners, and 68% of smartphone owners, state that they use their additional devices while watching TV.

However, only 37% of those who practice second screen viewing do so in order to look up information that is related to the program they are watching. Most TV viewers use their devices in order to check emails or visit a social network...

The Five Best Tools for Creating Videos Without Installing Software

The Five Best Tools for Creating Videos Without Installing Software | Information Technology & Social Media News | Scoop.it

Over the years I've published some lists and reviews of free tools for creating videos online. Quite a few of those tools have been for creating simple videos that are really just automated, audio slideshows. See Animoto for an example of this. There's nothing inherently wrong with having your students use those tools, but at some point you will want to take your video projects to the next level. These are the five tools that I recommend for creating and editing videos without installing any special software.

10 Amazing #SocialMedia Statistics [INFOGRAPHIC]

10 Amazing #SocialMedia Statistics [INFOGRAPHIC] | Information Technology & Social Media News | Scoop.it
Did you know that Twitter is grabbing more new registrations than Facebook, with more than half of its entire userbase compromised of people who have signed up in the last year, compared to just 19 percent for Mark Zuckerberg’s baby?

What if I said that almost a quarter (23 percent) of Facebook users check their account five or more times each day, Twitter users are 33 percent more likely to be Democrats or – sorry Foursquare – that 74 percent of Americans are unfamiliar with the concept of ‘checking in’.

These, and several other amazing social media statistics, can be found in the infographic on social media statistics...

Social Influencers: Digital Marketing’s Most Overlooked Resource

Social Influencers: Digital Marketing’s Most Overlooked Resource | Information Technology & Social Media News | Scoop.it

It is hard to believe that in a digital world where people are so connected, it still seems to be completely difficult for businesses to use that to their advantage to more efficiently maximize their ROI. Companies continue to spend on banner ads instead of on the people who can really make a difference in the way people purchase.

This infographic should help researchers and advertisers see what great potential there is in the power of social media and general online influence. Bloggers, tweeters, and Facebook champions really can be wise investments; read more at the article link.

Infographic: Hackers Create An Amazing, Illegal Portrait Of The Internet

Infographic: Hackers Create An Amazing, Illegal Portrait Of The Internet | Information Technology & Social Media News | Scoop.it

It wasn’t malicious. The file itself was the size of a small JPEG. It was given the absolute lowest priority. And it was set to self-destruct if anything went wrong. But this small file allowed one single hacker to measure the Internet activity of nearly half a million connected devices around the world, then share the results with everyone.

How was this even possible? The "hacker" barely hacked anything. In reality, they gained access to all these systems because each had the default "root" set as a password. With this access in hand, they ran several tests focusing on Internet structure and activity. And what they created from all this data is a spectacular map that captures a day in the life of the Internet (and all of its users).

10 Steps to Successful Social Networking

10 Steps to Successful Social Networking | Information Technology & Social Media News | Scoop.it

[ For practical reasons, I decided to integrate the contributions from the "SOCIAL NETWORKING skills" topic here - 01-27-2012 ]  Martin Gysler

Networking is about meeting and building relationships with people for a purpose. It’s that last part that counts in the definition, the purposeful part. Otherwise we’re all just socializing, which is what much of it amounts to anyway because if you don’t know your purpose, it’s pretty difficult to achieve it.

That’s fine if you just enjoy socializing for the sake of socializing (and, actually, the best social networkers are people like that usually). However, if you’re spending marketing dollars and the prosperity of your business depends on the success of your social networking, you’d better do a bit more than socialize.

1. The Question You’d Better Answer First
Why are you interested in social networking? To build your business? How, exactly?Do you sell online or just promote online? Are you locally, nationally, or internationally focused? Do you want people to talk about your business online, share your links, spread the word about you, learn more about you, recommend you, sign up for a program, get a free sample, get your e-newsletter, read your blog, interact with you, ask questions, get a membership, order a product, pay for a service, refer you to their friends?
