Here's an experiment: Name five iconic entrepreneurs. Actually, don't bother, because we can pretty much predict your answer. Every year, we ask the Inc. 500 honorees to name the entrepreneurs they most admire. The answers: Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, Richard Branson, Mark Cuban, and Bill Gates. We've also seen Mark Zuckerberg and Tony Hsieh. The list varies a bit each year, but one constant remains: They're all men.

 

That may not seem like much of a problem. After all, the entire country, and in many cases much of the world, has benefited from the contributions of these men: the jobs they've created, the technologies they've built, the instant access to European footwear. So what does it matter if they're all sporting a Y chromosome?

Whatever their personality quirks and limitations, your grandparents probably simply gritted their teeth and got on with life, toughing out any difficulties that arose. But these days we live in the age of self-help. That's great news for those with mental trauma or problematic personalities. Help abounds to assist people who want to become the best, happiest version of themselves, alleviating a lot of human misery.

 

But it is possible to take self-help too far.

Whenever you're approaching any unique partnership, there's a couple things that I look at. One is, What is the joint set of capabilities that you're bringing to the table? It's not just about what Porch can do for that company, or what that company can do for Porch. It's, what is the joint set of capabilities? And you put it on the table, and you look at that. I think the second thing is, you come up with a vision of what that partnership can do together.
