In recent years, I’ve written several Linked In posts about innovation – how to encourage it, how to provide institutional support for it, and how it can transform regional economies. Though serendipity may be part of the formula, innovations don’t come about through happenstance. They start with an idea. The idea is tested and nurtured until it becomes an innovation. Then the innovation is deployed for the benefit of others.

The items on this year’s list are prime examples of that. In addition to those listed above, the list includes: a news use for an old drug, ketamine, in treatment-resistant depression; improved interoperability resources  allowing hospitals and medical offices to share clinical data, images and medications more easily; and at No. 1, the use of gut bacteria, or the microbiome, to prevent, diagnose and treat disease.
