This Psychology Study Shows That You Can Accurately Judge Someone From How They Look

This Psychology Study Shows That You Can Accurately Judge Someone From How They Look | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

We might spend days, months, or even years trying to figure someone out. Is he who he says he is? Should I trust her? The wheels in our head spin as we think of all the variables and how they'll play out.

And still, we keep hearing that we should just listen to our instincts. Complicated questions, simple answer. What should we do, and where did this whole idea of the gut instinct come from, anyway?

Intuition isn't some magical, mysterious quality that we carry with us. It actually comes from the knowledge and past experiences that we all carry. Even if we're unable to explain why we feel the way we do, there's a logical explanation behind our gut feelings.

Whenever you encounter anything new, the unconscious side of your brain is constantly making assessments. It takes in certain cues, such as a smile or parts of a story, and then matches it with something similar in our database of memories to come up with a conclusion. Meanwhile, our conscious side remains unaware of this rapid process taking place.

What is Your Character and is it Helping or Hurting You as a Leader? | #LEADERship | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it
Every day, it seems, we’re bombarded with news of leaders, corporate heads, politicians and other key figures in our society whose behavior shocks and deeply disappoints us.

Whether it’s egregious lying, or a lack of accountability, or rampant narcissism or indifference to others, we’re reminded daily of how important character is in our lives and in the successes (or failures) we create and achieve.

This article, Scooped from a fellow pre-service teacher, Jan (thanks Jan!) spoke to me on many levels.  Although not directly linked to my teaching areas of health and science, these aspects of learning are often forgotten in the classroom.  I am a gentle, nurturing person and I hope that reflects when I am teaching.  Reiterating to my students the importance of being responsible, forgiving and compassionate to themselves and others is vital in creating working relationships in a classroom environment.

Being able to listen with focus and empathy is key, whereby those in our care feel supported and heard. In a world where everyone is so busy and time often seems to be the commodity that we have the least of, this diagram really serves to remind us that we need to listen constructively, suggest skilfully and try to understand the emotion of those we are engaging with in all that we do. Purposeful listening rather than just hearing is key.

Leaders Who Can Read Collective Emotions Are More Effective | Empathy | EQ

Leaders Who Can Read Collective Emotions Are More Effective | Empathy | EQ | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

Until now, there have been a variety of tools for managers who wish to measure the emotional cues of individuals, such as the Brief Affect Recognition Test to understand cross-cultural facial expressions. Facial expressions provide a wealth of reliable information about how others are making sense of the world around them, and allow us to tailor our responses to the individual in a one-on-one situation.

This represents one of the key measures of emotional intelligence, which evaluates how well individuals perceive and deal with affectively charged interpersonal situations.

Read more at http://knowledge.insead.edu/strategy/leaders-who-can-read-collective-emotions-are-more-effective-4002#VsZzWHkFKKeIo3ac.99But there are situations in which leaders have to deal with the emotions of large groups of people, not just those of one or a few individuals and most managers don’t have time to operate on a one-on-one basis all the time. Understanding the collective can help leaders respond effectively to the group as a whole. This happens in situations such as dealing with the collective anxiety of executives facing the news of corporate restructuring; or public authorities dealing with the collective anger of large groups of people in the streets; or politicians seeking to inspire large groups of people to win an election. Those with the skill to pick up on the subtle emotional cues of the collective can adapt accordingly and, according to our research, earn more respect as a result. So how can this ability to see the forest for the trees be applied by leaders?

Why You Can Focus in a Coffee Shop but Not in Your Open Office

Why You Can Focus in a Coffee Shop but Not in Your Open Office | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

New research shows that it may not be the sound itself that distracts us…it may be who is making it. In fact, some level of office banter in the background might actually benefit our ability to do creative tasks, provided we don’t get drawn into the conversation. Instead of total silence, the ideal work environment for creative work has a little bit of background noise. That’s why you might focus really well in a noisy coffee shop, but barely be able to concentrate in a noisy office.

One study, published in the Journal of Consumer Research, found that the right level of ambient noise triggers our minds to think more creatively. The researchers, led by Ravi Mehta of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, examined various levels of noise on participants as they completed tests of creative thinking.

Turbulent times are where the "action is" and when leadership is needed the most ... and when it counts the most.  The only question is will you choose to grab the "turbulent" bull by the horns and lead your people and organization to even greater potential, or will you let someone else lead instead ( ... perhaps your competition or adversary)?
