How an Interdisciplinary Transmedia Project Can Address Mental Illness Stigma

Dr. Pamela Rutledge's insight:

Eager to learn more about 'For the Records' and it's dynamics--interactivity, audience participation, multiple threads--and where the gaming elements intersect with the other elements.  All the things that create a rich sense of narrative transportation and multi-sensory experience may go a long way to shift perceptions through empathy.

Mona Shattell:  "How does one go about an interdisciplinary project spanning art and science? How might this look? we set out to explore how mental health advocacy, video game design, and documentary filmmaking could come together to enhance understanding and fight stigma about mental illness."

Dr. Pamela Rutledge's insight:

#Psych note: storytelling is one of the most powerful ways to change beliefs and behavior that are the foundation for social roles.  Transmedia and other immersive narratives can expand gender roles in ways that traditional media can't.  From Cate McQuillen: "There’s such a need for a girl who’s not a princess."  I would rephrase w/what transmedia delivers: "there's such a need to experience being a girl (or being around a girl) who is not a princess."

State of Syn Tells a Story with Mobile and Google Glass [#Transmedia]

Dr. Pamela Rutledge's insight:

Whether or not State of Syn succeeds commercially or critically, they should get kudos for pushing boundaries of multi-sensory #transmedia #storytelling and helping people think differently about integrating technology such as Google Glass.  Efforts like this emphasize #AR apps and wearable technology as a rich form of experience instead of creepy privacy violation. In this case, the game mechanics do not tie directly to the series.  The Google Glass is more of a "parallel play" experience linking narrative with gaming.  One app (for $) creates a “synesthesia” layer – the same trait held by the show’s lead protagonist Annika Drake.  (I've always wanted to know what it was like to taste music and see feelings.)  This should light a fire under other innovators to get creative!  Can't wait to see what happens.

The Digital Rocking Chair's curator insight, January 7, 2014 3:14 AM

Mike Vogel:  "State of Syn isn’t an ordinary series. There are episodes with a stylistic approach that feels more like a video game than a webseries, a mobile app where you unlock puzzles, and a Google Glass app currently in development."

Brielleariana:  "Transmedia is such a new concept that I had to physically add it to my Word document dictionary to avoid the stupid red lines" ...

Dr. Pamela Rutledge's insight:

I love Word dictionary updates as tiny markers of substantive change--I had to add 'cocreation' and 'cocreator' to mine along with transmedia. Interestingly, it already knew 'prosumer.'

This is a fascinating post, coming as it does, from a fan's perspective.  Darceny is a website that acts as both a book and viewing club:  "the place to discuss Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and its modern day adaptation, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries."

Louise Robinson-Lay's curator insight, May 6, 2013 6:26 AM

A great way to teach using trains edit storytelling.
