Fuel3D: A handheld 3D scanner for less than $1000

The world’s first handheld point-and-shoot, full color 3D scanner available for under $1,000. Fire up your creativity!

Via Henrik Safegaard - Cloneartist
Henrik Safegaard - Cloneartist's curator insight, August 13, 2013 3:59 PM

Wow - they got a Kickstarter explotion here with triple their goal -

In contrast, the core technology behind Fuel3D fuses geometric and photometric stereo 3D recovery techniques and is finely tuned to capture high resolution 3D color images. This raw capability provides the opportunity for an object to be captured in true 3D geometry and full color. The technology is also inherently good at capturing other highly textured surfaces, both organic and inorganic.

Once a shot has been taken on the Fuel3D scanner the raw image data is converted into true 3D color geometrical data by our own software, which is included with the Fuel3D scanner. To run the Fuel3D software, you will need a reasonable specification computer (Mac, Windows 7 or higher, 2GB RAM, dual-core processor).

Our software generates a 3D color data file and allows some basic editing functionality prior to export:

Trimming of unnecessary areas Adjusting the resolution for export, in turn reducing the polygon number for easier handlingExporting in commonly used 3D file formats, including .OBJ .STL and .PLY with color

Though the hardware carries the same 720p 0.7-inch OLED panels as its sibling, it's been tweaked for use in a standing position with beefed up support for balance and comfort. The hardware also packs a picture-in-picture feature to catch different views of operations, and even the ability to rotate and flip video feeds. While the headgear has been approved for use in Japan, it hasn't been confirmed for a launch in other territories. In other words, don't expect to see it if you go under the knife relatively soon.

Most 3D printers use a technique called extrusion, through which the printer melts plastic and lays it down in layers to create a 3D object. But the Form 1 features stereolithography, which uses a laser to cure liquid resin into microscopic layers, resulting in much more precise creations.

More interesting is that they pronaunce that they will make fully functionally organs within 10 to 20 eyars. Maybe some should start saving up for the next Liver.

This will change the world as we know it.

Very interesting news.

Lead author on the paper Baoqing Sun said: “It might seem a bit counter-intuitive to think that more information can be captured from a detector which uses just a single pixel rather than the multi-megapixel detectors found in conventional digital cameras.

However, digital camera sensors have a very limited sensitivity beyond the spectrum of visible light, whereas a single-pixel detector can easily be made to capture information far beyond the visible, reaching wavelengths from X-ray to TeraHertz.

"Unlike the jerry-built contraptions of the past, the Replicator 2s are sleek, metal, and stylish: MakerBot CEO Bre Pettis likens the design to “Darth Vader driving Knight Rider’s KITT car while being airlifted by a Nighthawk spy plane.” There is also the lighting. Oh, the lighting. “LEDs are part of our core values as a company,” Pettis jokes. The new machine will glow in any hue—”to match the color of your couch,” he says, “or like something in the movie Tron.”

You’ve heard of 3-D printers, but you probably don’t own one yet. Pettis thinks the Replicator 2 will change that."
