1. Whitespace Directional Cues

Allowing your form or call-to-action (CTA) some breathing room will help it stand out from the rest of the page and get noticed. However, keep in mind that although whitespace is critical to the organization and flow of a landing page, it can just as easily be overdone, creating a sense of disconnect and lowering the chance of conversion.


2. Explicit Directional Cues

You only have a few seconds to capture your visitors’ attention, so why not make things really obvious for them? Arrows say “Please just do this. You don’t need to worry about the other stuff”.


3. Line-of-Sight Cues

Less subtle than arrows, but arguably just as effective, is the use of line of sight. If you’re building a landing page, experiment with images of human faces and use line of sight towards the form to increase conversions.

I’ve written in the past about how to hack Google Search Console to get more data from your reports. For example, setting up directories in GSC, which will focus your reporting on URLs located just in those directories. That will help, and it can enable you to find more landing pages in GSC. But it’s not perfect, especially for sites that don’t have categories mapped out as distinct directories. And you’re still limited to one thousand rows of data per directory.

You can also learn how to code and use the Search Console API directly. Just understand that there’s a learning curve involved. Unfortunately, I know many people who have started to dig into the API and then wasted time, never got it to work, and pulled their hair out in frustration. If you have the technical aptitude to code and tap into the API, I recommend doing that. But if you’re looking for a solid solution right out of the box, that might not be your best option. Let’s move on.

So, based on the limitations I listed above, wouldn’t it be nice to have a tool that can easily and seamlessly export all of your landing pages (or queries) from GSC to Excel? And I mean ALL of them. Enter Analytics Edge.

  • Minimalism is in. Minimalist designs are effective because they don’t have any distractions. They force a user to confront a CTA, and don’t waste time on unnecessary elements that might draw away from that encounter.
  • Easier is better. Users are impatient, and crave instant gratification. If you make the signup process take even a few seconds longer than it has to, you’ll turn at least some of them away. Keep it simple.
  • Always provide additional information. Minimalism is important, but you also need to provide additional information for those who want it—make them scroll for it to get the best of both worlds.
  • Offer social proof. A few client references or testimonials can take your page to the next level. It’s all about building initial trust. It’s also valuable to include contact information to legitimize your business.

"I’ve designed many-a-landing-page, and for that I have a go-to hierarchy. In Google Docs, I start by:

  • Stating how the offer relieves a specific pain for the reader
  • Explaining what the offer will allow that person to do (the benefit)
  • Explaining why I am uniquely positioned to provide the offer (why I have the best solution)
  • Addressing the most common objections that people often have before they’re willing to accept my offer
  • Telling people how they can get offer (the call to action)
  • Providing social proof from people just like the reader, or from people they know and admire

Only when I have that foundational information in place do I start writing copy and designing the page."

Including too much irrelevant info on your landing pages is dangerous because it dilutes your message, overwhelms visitors and hurts your conversion rate. If your visitors are slammed with excess copy, they can’t quickly determine what you’re offering, identify whether they want your offer or convert with your (buried) CTA.

Lightboxes, a remedy for excess copy, are modal windows that open over a landing page, filling the screen and dimming the content behind. They allow you to prominently display content requested by your page visitor (your visitors click a button to prompt them).  Lightboxes help you add nice-to-know details onto your landing pages (like speaker bios, featured products, your privacy policy or terms of service), all the while keeping your audience’s focus on your CTA. By designing your page with these in mind, you can include information a visitor would otherwise have to navigate away from your page to find.

"Both Leadpages and ClickFunnels offer tons of good-looking, professional templates to choose from. The ClickFunnels templates tend to be a bit more visually dramatic, while the LeadPages templates are more straightforward.

When selecting a template, LeadPages offers an option to sort templates based on their typical conversion rate. Let’s say you are building a landing page for a webinar. You can filter the templates so that you are only looking at landing page templates for webinars and then sort them so the highest-converting templates are at the top.

LeadPages sorts templates by type AND conversion rate, and so the point goes to LeadPages.

For customization, ClickFunnels gives more options. LeadPages seems to have traded customization for simplicity and ease of use. For an uber-professional (or a real control freak) this could be an issue.

So the point for amount of customization options goes to ClickFunnels. I also love the graphics and icons that come with ClickFunnels. They are professional, good-looking, and easy to find with a simple search."
