"I think that VR is an incredible tool, but it’s not synonymous with immersion. As with any other technology it’s only as immersive as the storyteller is skillful."

“You should design for these issues – they aren’t an afterthought, they should be built in.”

Virtual reality experience can evoke intense reactions among the participants. Audience testing and the possibility to debrief experiences afterwards make sure the audience trust you as an immersive reality storyteller in the future, too.

If journalists want to raise real awareness of what is going on in the world, they can´t just offer the audience facts and images. They also have to give possibilities to feel the reality. Nonny de la Peña´s Project Syria is a great example of it.

The film festival just ended with a custom show called The Bomb which blew some minds with live music and immersive screening.
Earlier this year at SXSW, I met Brazilian film director Ricardo Laganaro who worked on the beautiful semi-spheric experience at the Rio's Museum of Tomorrow. He was also convinced that VR headset were killing the social bond and that other directions integrating a common experience should be explored. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/dec/17/museum-of-tomorrow-rio-de-janeiro-brazil-sustainability Adding live music is definitely a plus. For example, it really served the No Man's Sky during last year's Playstation Experience: A night under no man's sky Adding VR-like 360° degree display to this would have been incredible :) Finally, the film selection in the Tribeca's VR Arcade was great, helping to uncap the potential for this new media. Among the creators there were Chris Milk and his VRSE as well as Standford Virtual Interaction Lab... It might be a great place for VR and experential story telling in the future for sure...

Sandra Gaudenzi: "VR and 360 video projects have dominated the festival landscape this year, and small and big players want to catch the train while they can. Similar to the effect of The arrival of a train at La Ciotat (1895), the illusion of “being there” is associated with a wave of enthusiasm. Immersion and empathy are the new keywords, and the hope that this time we have found a technology that will trick our senses even more than the one before, seems to provoke a mini gold rush – or maybe just a high in the Gartner’s Media & Entertainment Hype Cycle."

Games allow us to explore uncharted worlds, enhance our own creativity and help us understand and solve complex problems in ways we never thought possible. Next-generation gaming experiences should keep these core ideals alive. If all else fails, games should ultimately just be fun, right?

Fascinating new ways to present narratives... "letting us experience stories in a visceral, multi-sensual, personal and participatory way." "Clouds over Sidra" is one of the projects featured in the exhibit created by vrse tools. This virtual reality project immerses the viewer into a Syrian refugee camp through the eyes of a 12 year old girl. Although vrse tools are out of my capacity to navigate, I can only imagine how cool it would be to recreate historical events in a virtual reality to allow students to explore the past in such an intimate way.

Interesting article showcasing the convergence of graphic journalism and gaming. This technology will now give access to first person perspectives at crime scenes/big events to the general public. |
Michel Reilhac: "In an era where our digital culture has become superficial, virtual reality is a key to unlocking new in-depth experiences."
