This paper will focus on ways to improve the practice of competency modeling. While addressing improvements to competency modeling practices the paper will consider Organizations, practitioners and researchers who use and study competency models. These improvements will set the ground work for a best practices comparison of competency modeling studies. Best practices can be determined through criterion-related validation studies that indicate the success of a competency based measure for predicting performance. This paper provides guidance for future studies comparing successful competency models. Best practices comparisons may address some of the classic questions and critiques of the competency modeling process.
