Canada. It’s Not As Easy as They Say: International Students’ Perspectives About Gaining Canadian Work Experience

Canada. It’s Not As Easy as They Say: International Students’ Perspectives About Gaining Canadian Work Experience  | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it
This study provides insights into international students’ perspectives of preparing for entry into employment in the Canadian workforce. From a human capital perspective, international students are valuable resources for the Canadian labour market and other countries where populations are in decline. However, most research on international students has focused on their initial transition experience, and available research on their employment experiences is often limited to the post-graduation transition. International students need to build their capacity for employment concurrently while they are studying, gaining local work experience. In this article we present an analysis of critical incidents collected from international students which highlights five key barriers in their experience of the Canadian work context, including policies and procedures, competition and economic conditions, challenges for navigating local cultural norms, language abilities, and their personal life circumstances. The discussion draws connections between international student recruitment and their longer-term goals for residency in Canada, with recommendations for bridging policies and services.

At the college level, international student enrolment rose from 5.2% to 13.2% over the same period.

COVID-19. An opportunity to change international higher education?

COVID-19. An opportunity to change international higher education? | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it

Predictions that nothing much will change as a result of the coronavirus strike me as a reflection of the inherent biases and binaries of international higher education. Instead we should be directing our efforts towards engaging with globalisation and its discontents more proactively.

Canada/British Columbia. An Update on the Economic Impact of International Education in British Columbia

Canadian Vocational Association / Association canadienne de la formation professionnelle's insight:

n 2011/12 academic year, international students in British Columbia spent close to $2.1 billion on tuition, to pay for accommodation and food, and on discretionary items such as participating in arts, culture, and recreation activities. This sum is translated to a direct contribution equivalent to $1.48 billion in provincial GDP; supporting over 23,410 jobs; and almost $75 million in government revenue generated. Enrolment of international students in Canadian education and training institutes has been increasing steadily over the past decade, and BC is not exception. During the period between 2009/2010 academic year and 2011/12 academic year where data on student enrolment is directly comparable, the number of international students in BC grew from 94,000 to 106,600, at an average growth rate of 6.5% per year. This rate of growth is much faster than enrolment growth of domestic students.

International student mobility and academic performance: Does timing matter?

International student mobility and academic performance: Does timing matter? | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it
In this study, we examine the impact of exchange programs’ timing on students’ academic performance, focusing on the moment in which students travel and the length of the period spent abroad. To provide causal evidence, we exploit unique data of more than 10,000 students from a well-known and internationalized Brazilian university from 2010 to 2020. By combing Propensity Score Matching with Difference in Differences techniques, we find that international mobility impacts groups of students differently. Students who travel closer to the end of their undergraduate courses benefit the most from the mobility experience (an increase of 0.06 points on final standardized grades), while negative effects (-0.05 points) are found for those who travel at the beginning of their university program. Our results also show that, while student mobility impacts positively and significantly students who participate in programs lasting from one semester to one year (0.08 points), negative effects are associated with shorter periods abroad (-0.1 points).

The Outlook for International Students

The Outlook for International Students | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it
Everyone is wondering: what’s going to happen to enrolments in the fall?  Particularly, international enrolments?  It’s a big question because for the last decade pretty much 100% of all the increase in institutional income has come from fee income, much of it from international students.  Take that income away, and we’re talking about major cuts: in Australia, which is only slightly more international fee-dependent than Canada, the hit to the sector this term is estimated at over $5 billion.

Canada. The Relative Labour Market Performance of Former International Students: Evidence from the Canadian National Graduates Survey

We find that FISs outperform FBE immigrants by a substantial margin and underperform CBE individuals graduating from similar academic programs by a relatively modest margin. We also find some limited evidence, particularly among women, of a deterioration in FIS outcomes through the 2000s relative to both comparison groups. We argue that this deterioration is consistent with a quality tradeoff as postsecondary institutions and governments have reached deeper into international student pools to meet their demands for students and new immigrants without a commensurate increase in their supply.
