Canada/Quebec Regional Partnership: Ensuring skills training

Canada/Quebec Regional Partnership: Ensuring skills training | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it

Ensuring skills training is relevant and accessible to Quebec’s diverse workforce will be a key focus in addressing the region’s labour shortage, and is vital to building a robust economy across the province and across Canada.
We are partnering with the Commission des partenaires du marché du travail (CPMT), to ensure workers, employers and policymakers can respond to the demographic, technological and environmental factors transforming the region’s economy. The CPMT is a provincial, consultative organization that convenes relevant business, labour, education, community and government stakeholders, all with the goal of improving the labour market.

Over three years, the $20 million partnership is supporting 68 partner organizations to ensure Quebec is well poised to support the workforce of the future. In particular, testing ways to help underrepresented groups participate fully in Quebec’s labour market will provide insights and promising practices that can be applied across the broader skills ecosystem in Canada, as our population grows increasingly diverse.

while the pandemic’s financial toll could postpone the expected retirements of huge numbers of aging veterinarians and plumbers, those specialists will eventually step aside, with little letup in demand for the services they offer.

Colleges and universities are already being called upon to anticipate areas of growth and supply and to help Americans learn the skills they’ll need to weather the impending recession.

The teacher shortage is real, large and growing, and worse than we thought. When indicators of teacher quality (certification, relevant training, experience, etc.) are taken into account, the shortage is even more acute than currently estimated, with high-poverty schools suffering the most from the shortage of credentialed teachers.

The Canadian manufacturing sector has taken a hit in the past few years - especially Ontario - but there are pockets of stronger hiring activity and the most pressing issue is how employers are failing to address the generation gap between Millennials and generation X workers.

Canada. Troubles in Canada’s Health Workforce: The Why, the Where, and the Way Out of Shortages

Canada. Troubles in Canada’s Health Workforce: The Why, the Where, and the Way Out of Shortages | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it
Shortages usually call for the education, training, qualifying, and hiring as soon as possible of many more workers. But we have to be careful. The shortages are in specific occupations. “Better” needs as much attention as “more.”

This report analyzes the challenges in Canada’s health-sector workforce, focusing on imbalances between supply and demand, particularly for those most concerned with the provision of direct, hands-on support and care: physicians, nurses, and personal support workers (PSWs). It then makes recommendations on how to govern and strengthen the country’s cherished health system.

USA. This Isn't a Labor Shortage—It's a Strike by Workers Kicked in the Face by Low Wages for Too Long

USA. This Isn't a Labor Shortage—It's a Strike by Workers Kicked in the Face by Low Wages for Too Long | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it
Corporate America wants to frame all this as a “labor shortage.” But that’s not what’s really going on. In reality, there’s a living wage shortage, a hazard pay shortage, a childcare shortage, a paid sick leave shortage, and a health care shortage – and American workers are demanding an end to all these shortages. Or they won’t return to work.
They deserve it.

Job opportunities continue to knock for those who have particular skills and are willing to go where the work is.
Canadian Vocational Association / Association canadienne de la formation professionnelle's insight:

Some regions, like Western Canada, have provinces that are making extra efforts to recruit the kinds of people that employers require. Alternatively an entire industry known as “green collar employment” is rapidly expanding. Either way, shortages of qualified workers do indeed exist.

Canada. Mind the gap: No ‘people skills,’ no job

Canada. Mind the gap: No ‘people skills,’ no job | Vocational education and training - VET | Scoop.it
Investing in machinery and education is critical. Investing in Canadians' essential skills for living, learning and working is just as important but much less understood
Canadian Vocational Association / Association canadienne de la formation professionnelle's insight:

Work-force shortage is already here, especially in Western Canada. There are three components to the problem of labour shortages. The first two – an aging and shrinking work force, and a knowledge-skills shortage – have been well documented. But the third is a shortage of the essential skills required in any job.
