The advent of social media has brought a host of changes to the SEO industry, and online marketing as a whole. You would be hard-pressed to find a business with a decent online presence that does not have a Twitter account connected to their website, and at least one way to find that account.
Google and Bing recently alerted the SEO industry to the fact that they are using social media signals as a factor in ranking websites. Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Land wrote a post back in December 2010 talking about what social signals he thought the search engines are and will be using.

Google recently announced plans to implement real-time search capabilities, but what does it all mean?
Google’s new plans will index all real-time internet data – tweets, You Tube uploads, blog posts, and more –and return them in search engine results – as they happen in real-time. The results will be sorted by relevancy using frequently used keywords and/or current events.

As advertising channels proliferate online, we are constantly asked: which channel should I be using? The two heavy weight channels – search and display – have been mainstays for years now, but still aren’t fully understood.

Producing great content is a high ROI activity. Too often however I see people focused on producing individual pieces of content aiming to get links and attention.

If there's one thing I've learned in life, it's that size matters. Whether we're talking about popcorn at the movies, engagement rings or grade point average, there is no getting around it. Naturally, the same is true with Facebook Page communities, right?
Or is it really about the quality of the popcorn or the clarity of the ring (let's agree to leave GPA out of this)? Knowing what we should measure is the first step in understanding what these metrics actually tell us.

Earned media is the most trusted and credible form of content for a brand. The most trusted source of information about your company comes not from you, but from your highly satisfied customers -- otherwise known as your brand's advocates -- in the form of the content they create such as reviews, recommendations, ratings and stories about their experiences.

Ontolo, created by Ben Wills and Garrett French (who has since left the company to found Citation Labs), is a backlink discovery tool that will continually search for new potential link partners. By automating certain parts of the discovery process, Ontolo has the potential to be a huge time saver for any hardcore link builder, estimated at cutting down typical time spent on research by 80 percent.
Ontolo launched April 27, 2010, but was in the works since 2008. Simply put, Ontolo is a high quality white hat backlink prospecting machine that is a valuable asset for search engine optimization agencies, marketing agencies, and large corporations.

There’s been a lot of commotion recently about the integration of social signals into the search results of both Bing and Google.
Bing has the upper hand with those signals coming from Facebook while Google is still Google, and is still the search engine of choice worldwide, regardless of what signals they have or don’t have.
My question is not so much about who will win this game. Google is the 800-pound gorilla that Bing has to move in some direction so it can make any progress. That alone is a daunting task.
However, add into the mix that Bing actually already delivers better results (in many opinions) on certain searches that go beyond the blue link text results and you can see that this mountain is about more than a better service.

One of the first challenges link builders discover starting in a new industry is that building relationships takes time. Promoting infographics, guest posts, and other linkable assets with cold contacts can be difficult.
So a major focus in link building is relationship building. A few methods we've covered in the past include networking, e-mailing friendly commentary, blog commenting, blogging, using trackbacks, and connecting via Twitter and Linkedin.
In all these cases, the basic strategy is the same: contribute to the conversation in your industry, build relationships with influencers, and hope that those relationships lead to links.

Most regular Twitter users are familiar with creating and following lists. Twitter lists help you narrow down your incoming Twitter streams to a group of trusted people you follow or certain topics that are relevant to your business.
Lists are also extremely helpful in finding influencers in your industry, following them and building your own influence over time. Here's how I work with them.

Once your website starts getting at least some traffic from organic search queries, you can help increase conversions (inquiries, signups, purchases, phone calls etc) by investigating what happens once people reach your website from the search results.
You can use Google Analytics to choose what keywords to focus on and to check the entrance pages (landing pages) for issues hurting conversions.
