One thing that many people forget is that, in many cases, your business ultimately is a local business in the online space. Unless you are a pure online play people expect something more than just the usual e-mail dance to have contact. Many times, I use the example of IBM. Sure it’s a corporate behemoth but if you search for IBM with a local qualifier in Google there is likely to be a place page for a location if it exists in that city. IBM a local company? C’mon! Well, in a way yes. A leading local Internet authority, Mike Blumenthal, has put together a VERY comprehensive infographic about the local presence and how search and social play together to form it.

The social media marketing movement has the marketing world reconsidering everything and that’s a good thing. While progress is usually a good thing, it can create some friction that didn’t exist previously thus giving marketers fits. One area where that has truly taken hold is content marketing. Instead of imagery, a company should focus on utility in its communications. Instead of being concerned about perception, a brand is better suited to define its purpose. Instead of complexity and massive content generation, focus on simplicity and context when engaging in dialogue. Instead of messaging to your audience, seek to engage them in active participation. Instead of focusing on corporate values, focus on human values.Instead of relying solely on rationality, be prepared to embrace irrationality… We are only human, after all.

If you use Google products, Google probably has a fair amount of data about you. Of course, it provides a dashboard, where you can see just what they do have, and adjust accordingly, but it’s unlikely that the majority of users bother, while many probably don’t even realize it’s available to them.
Now that Google+ is out, Google is getting a whole lot more data, and if the new social network were ever to reach Facebook-like levels of usage, the amount of data would just be enormous. This kind of data has been invaluable to Facebook and its advertisers, and Google could soon have a lot more to offer its own advertisers.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is an important component of inbound marketing. As an online marketer, you likely know that SEO has two categories of influence on search engine rank. The first category is on-page factors, which include all the elements of a web page. The second category is off-page factors, which include inbound links, social media, authority, etc. However, are you aware of all the factors that make up these two categories? For a long time, I thought utilizing a strong Landing Page Optimization program was only available to large companies with large budgets. The software to create landing pages on the fly by keyword is pricey, and the learning curve is significant.
If you have the time, budget and manpower to utilize a design team and software that builds a landing page for every paid, organic, social and email marketing keyword or blast you send — Awesome!
The reality is, most of us do have time and budget limitations. Getting permission to spend thousands on software isn’t likely, but that doesn’t mean you have to give up on the idea. Think a bit deeper and build your landing pages for multiple purposes.
In the past, we would build a website, and send clicks to the homepage of that site. Then we got smart, and sent those same clicks to more relevant pages on the site. Then Landing Page Optimization was invented and we started hearing we needed a new page for every keyword, and the want vs. budget debate started heating up.

Facebook’s gravitational pull of 750 million users is enough to hold digital marketers spellbound. Once they get past the sheer size, they find that Facebook also offers unique and nuanced selling opportunities amidst difficult obstacles.
First off, Facebook users have better things to be doing. The average Facebook user is connected to 130 Friends and 80 interest groups and makes his or her preferences known through rich profiles and by posting 90 pieces of content per month. Facebook users spend 700 billion minutes per month in an active, relaxed environment where word-of-mouth is built into every turn. The traffic, of course, also matters. Compete found that large brands like Coca-Cola are getting about 11% of their unique visits through Facebook Pages.
Selling on or through Facebook now has a name: F-commerce. As with most aspects of social media, it does not yet live up to the potential that many foresee and it has no problem finding both strong advocates and cynical detractors. Quickly establishing trust is critical in ecommerce sales. Taylor Nelson Sofres’s 2006 survey showed that customers terminate 70% of online purchases because of a lack of trust, which resulted in $1.9 billion in lost revenues for that year alone. There are many factors that contribute to the perceived trustworthiness of an ecommerce site. Not only is the inclusion of trust elements important, their visibility, or placement on the home page, also plays a vital role in determining whether customers feel comfortable performing online transactions.
My company recently performed a study in which we asked 18 participants to share their first impressions of four ecommerce sites: AbeBooks, Blue Nile, eToys.com, and Newegg.com. We chose these sites from a Forbes list of the best ecommerce sites of 2005. [1]
Before beginning our study, we identified the trust elements we would evaluate, which included, for example, the placement of a site’s search box and trusted-site icons from services such as VeriSign. Our study identified 26 trust elements across the four sites’ home pages. Participants quickly judged sites’ trustworthiness based on the presence and placement of these trust elements.
