On Thursday, Google announced a major change to its search algorithm, designed to weed out shallow and low-quality content from its top search results. Content farms were seen by many as the target. Were they hit? Who was hit? Some figures are coming out.
If you were expecting these figures to show Demand Media’s eHow site to have been harmed — surprise! Two studies show eHow actually gained. I’m still crunching through some of the figures, but the biggest “content farm” type brand that seems to have suffered are Associated Content.

The Apple iPod came out a month after September 11th, in 2001, in October.
It was consider groundbreaking for its marketing power: “1000 songs” was WAY easier to understand than how many megabytes of storage an MP3 player had on board. But, if you ask me, the iTunes store is the big story. Why? Because it put a one-click marketplace with a very low-friction sales channel directly into our hands, attached to a device that willingly sucks up the purchases and plays them to us at our whim. The iTunes store was one of the first brilliantly distributed marketplaces because it was a simple management app that morphed into a simple sales tool. One last thing about Apple before I move on to talk about the future of marketplaces: have you been to the Apple Store lately? If so, you probably bought something. Notice the credit-card-readers-on-the-phone trick? Well, that’s part of the story, too. The sense of doing transactions without eating up space for registers is part of this. So, let’s talk about my thoughts on the future of marketplaces.

Last week Google announced an official update to Social Search – something they’ve been playing around with for some time now. The idea behind social search is that if a Google account user does a search for something they will get the most relevant results according to Google now mixed in with results that Google determines are important from those in your social networks.
The news for anyone thinking about SEO is summed by this statement from Google – . . .relevance isn’t just about pages—it’s also about relationships. Google has officially moved from playing with social search to altering the SEO landscape with it. While the newly socialized results are dependent upon the surfer being logged in to their Google account, the significance from an SEO standpoint is potentially game changing. As Google continues to advance this type of thinking when it comes to placement of search results it will bring the online acts of content creation, network building and social participation to new heights.

Whether you run a business with a YouTube channel, you’re a blogger whose blog has a complementary YouTube channel, or you’re someone with a blog who’s thinking of setting up a YouTube channel, you may be interested in knowing how to brand a YouTube channel.
Why is branding important? The most famous brands in the world are identified by their logos. In fact, a college kid can be wearing a red shirt with white lettering in the font of the Coke brand, but the message on the shirt doesn’t even have to read “Coke” in order for us to know what brand it is.

Earlier in the week I wrote a post about two factors that played a significant part in the growing of my own blogging business over the last 2 years.
1. making a mind shift away from just relying upon advertising and affiliate revenue to starting to build my own products. 2. investing in training and starting to learn from others who had experience in marketing and launching products online.

Start-up organizations provide an extraordinary example of chaos organized into manageable chunks.
Perhaps more than anyone else, the individuals who comprise a start-up team are required to understand their team’s goals across a variety of disciplines — research, marketing, design, development, architecture, etc. — as well as their own responsibility to move the company’s overarching objective forward. Entrepreneurs must choose the direction, designers must think through the options, and developers must cull a functional product or service, all while giving feedback to and receiving it from their colleagues.

In January, Google promised that it would take action against content farms that were gaining top listings with “shallow” or “low-quality” content.
Now the company is delivering, announcing a change to its ranking algorithm designed take out such material. The new algorithm — Google’s “recipe” for how to rank web pages — starting going live yesterday, the company told me in an interview today. Google changes its algorithm on a regular basis, but most changes are so subtle that few notice. This is different. Google says the change impacts 12% (11.8% is the unrounded figure) of its search results in the US , a far higher impact on results than most of its algorithm changes. The change only impacts results in the US. It may be rolled out worldwide in the future.
